Maritime defence and security

The rise of drones, both above and below water, is creating new threats in the maritime domain. Our Navy faces the challenge of protecting a huge area from large numbers of very difficult to observe vehicles.

Drones are able to observe, place explosives and fire torpedoes and missiles. Added to the existing threat of submarines and mines, these capabilities create major risks for the Navy, the civilian maritime domain, our critical logistics infrastructure and society. TNO is researching these risks and working with Dutch industry to develop scalable and rapidly implementable countermeasures. In doing so, we focus on monitoring, detecting and identifying threats, as well as intervening, up to the highest escalation level. Finally, together with relevant partners, we ensure that the awareness and sense of urgency around these new threats grows.

With a focus on the full package of research, innovation and awareness, TNO is working on solutions to the crucial challenges on and under the water. This is how we keep the Netherlands safe and resilient in the maritime domain.
