Research Scientist Wellbore Geomechanics | Utrecht

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Research Scientist Wellbore Geomechanics at TNO in Utrecht!

About this position

As a Research Scientist Wellbore Geomechanics you will contribute to multidisciplinary geosciences projects in the domains of CO2 storage, geothermal energy, subsidence and induced seismicity. Together with different teams of the Geological Survey of the Netherlands, your role is to help other experts with geomechanical analyses for various research projects in these domains. You will be based in the Geomechanics Team of TNO’s Geoscience & Technology Department. Your work will be part of national and international projects for a range of clients, including business-to-business projects, national programs and European research projects.

What will be your role?

With your data processing and modeling skills, combined with experience in geosciences, you focus on characterization of the in-situ state of stress in the subsurface. In particular, how geothermal operations, CO2 storage, and/or gas depletion cause changes in the state of stress. Your work involves analyzing and processing available data on in-situ stress state in the Netherlands and abroad, and interpreting these data in the context of subsurface properties. This can be done through well logs analysis and application of machine learning techniques as well as geomechanical modeling (e.g. stress loading and stress changes, the effects of reservoir plasticity, and near wellbore stresses). By doing so, you will advance knowledge on the state of stress for safe and sustainable use of the subsurface.

You will work together with teams in the Geological Survey of the Netherlands with strong expertise in development of databases and artificial intelligence, as well as geomechanics, geophysics, geology and reservoir engineering. You will be involved in dissemination of data and models through public repositories, reports and articles, and work closely with stakeholders from various subsurface projects as well as experts outside of TNO. You are keen to explore novel methods and develop your own approaches for data processing, Python programming, stress analysis and geomechanical modeling. Reporting and presenting your work to peers and clients in an understandable manner will be an important part of your work, as well as writing scientific publications.

What we expect from you

We are looking for a research scientist with strong interest in geomechanical applications:

  • MSc. related to Earth Sciences with a background in rock mechanics and/or geomechanical analyses.
  • Proven interest in and experience with programming (e.g. Python) and preferably with version control platforms (GitLab, GitHub) and/or software development.
  • You are a team player and like working in a multidisciplinary, creative and applied scientific environment with strong ambition to develop your expertise and to develop yourself within the organization.
  • You are a fast learner, driven, pro-active, result-oriented, have good reporting skills, and take ownership of your work.
  • You enjoy reporting and presenting your work to colleagues and national and international stakeholders.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career.
