Linux Engineer – The Hague / Hybrid – 32-40h

Want to make your mark on our time? Come work as a Linux Engineer at TNO in The Hague!

What will be your role?

Introduction
Working at TNO means contributing to research and innovative applications that matter — to the energy transition, the use of safe AI in healthcare, the future of digital identity, and our security.

As a Linux Engineer, you’ll be part of the Infrastructure team — a group of professionals focused on developing and maintaining infrastructure and services, including server and storage systems, LAN and WAN connections, and workstations. The ICT services provided by the Infrastructure department are set up in accordance with ITIL4 principles. The Linux professionals in the team manage High Performance Computing (HPC) systems, Docker containers, and Kubernetes clusters.

At TNO, you’ll have the opportunity from day one to work with an experienced team using the latest and most in-demand technologies on the market. This ensures that you’ll never stop developing yourself.

What will be your role?
As a Linux Engineer, you’ll be in close contact with the business. You respond proactively to user needs, developments, and changes that may impact the continuity of systems and applications. Current changes we’re dealing with include the growing use of cloud technologies and increased focus on security.

In addition, TNO actively offers you the chance to work with Kubernetes and build container platforms using tools such as Docker, for instance in HPC environments. The Linux team manages several HPC clusters, and configuring and maintaining these advanced high-performance computing systems is part of the role.

You’ll be a valued member of a highly professional, innovative work environment, with international top experts as colleagues. Naturally, you’ll also be responsible for managing, monitoring, and maintaining complex and virtualized IT infrastructures. You'll gain experience with various Linux distributions such as RedHat Core & Enterprise, Debian, OpenSUSE/SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Ubuntu, etc. You'll work with technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, GPU-accelerated computing, and Red Hat OpenShift — all with a strong focus on preventing issues wherever possible.

You will maintain systems accurately and in accordance with TNO procedures and ISO standards.

What we expect from you

As a Linux Engineer, you’ll be in frequent contact with the business and play a crucial role in the optimization and maintenance of the Linux environment.
To be successful in this role, it’s important that you recognize yourself in the following profile:

  • You have at least a bachelor’s-level (HBO) working and thinking ability, preferably demonstrated by a degree.
  • You have experience working with Linux in an enterprise environment.
  • You have a true passion for Linux. In your view, there is no alternative — Linux should be the standard operating system. You're able to accept that this is not (yet) the case at TNO.
  • You have a passion for configuring and managing software and hardware, and you understand the importance of proper documentation.
  • TNO operates bilingually, so a good command of both Dutch and English is essential.
  • You are a true team player and play nice with others.
  • You are able to successfully pass our security screening, including those by the AIVD and MIVD (Dutch intelligence and defense agencies).

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with real impact. And plenty of opportunities — at TNO, you largely steer your own career. In addition to a gross full-time monthly salary between €4,000 and €5,200 (depending on your knowledge and experience), you’ll receive a 13th month (8.33%) and a flexible budget (5.58% + €180), both of which are paid out monthly. In total, your monthly compensation can amount to €4,600 to €6,000. On top of that, you’ll receive 8% holiday allowance and every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
  • An employer that values and encourages diverse talent, with initiatives like the Female Leadership Program, our Rainbow Community and round tables on inclusion topics.
  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 of 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • A good pension scheme.
