Want to make your mark on our time by advancing the development of Integrated Photonics? Become a Process Engineer at TNO in Enschede!

What will be your role?

At the Photonic Integration Technology Center (PITC), we are shaping the future of integrated photonics. Founded by TNO (at Holst Centre), Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), the University of Twente (UT), and PhotonDelta, PITC is dedicated to bridging the gap between groundbreaking research and real-world applications. Our work contributes to solving global challenges, from improving road safety and health monitoring to enabling secure communications and energy-efficient data handling.

What will you be doing?
As a Process Engineer, you will help develop and optimize the fabrication processes for photonic integrated circuits (PICs), focusing on ultra-low-loss modulators and waveguides on silicon nitride (SiN). These components play a vital role in quantum and microwave photonics.

Your work will be hands-on and varied, with a focus on integrating piezoelectric materials into PICs. You will:

  • Develop advanced deposition processes for piezoelectric materials such as PZT, aluminum nitride, and (in the future) barium titanate.
  • Characterize piezoelectric film structures using techniques like AFM, XRD, SEM, and in-depth analysis.
  • Integrate piezoelectric layers with SiN waveguides and assess their functional performance.
  • Support customers in applying your photonic solutions to their real-world applications.
  • Collaborate closely with experts from the University of Twente, as well as TNO teams in Enschede and Eindhoven.

You will be employed by TNO with your primary office located at the University of Twente (Enschede).

What we expect from you

  • A bachelor's or master’s degree in Applied Physics, Nanoscience, or a related field, with solid expertise in thin-film deposition and photolithographic patterning.
  • At least 4 years of experience in technology development within a cleanroom environment, ideally in an industrial setting.
  • Knowledge of CMOS or silicon photonics processes and device physics is a plus.
  • A proactive attitude with a strong sense of ownership and responsibility.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written).
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to organize practical work efficiently.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.
