Lead Vertical Integration Engineer/ Process Architect | Eindhoven

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Lead Vertical Integration Engineer/ Process Architect at TNO in Eindhoven!

About this position

At the forefront of Europe’s photonics innovation, TNO is building a state-of-the-art pilot line for Indium Phosphide (InP) photonic chips at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. As part of the EU-funded PIXEurope program, this pilot line will enable the transition from groundbreaking research to large-scale industrial manufacturing, making advanced photonic technologies faster, more reliable, and widely accessible. To make this ambitious step a reality, we are looking for a Senior Process Engineer Epitaxy. In this role, you will play a key role in developing and optimizing the critical processes that drive our pilot line. With your expertise, you will help build Europe’s next-generation capability in integrated photonics, ensuring that innovation is translated into stable, scalable, and high-yield production.

What will be your role?

As Lead Vertical Integration Engineer, you will take ownership of the overall integration of processes across the photonic chip manufacturing line. You will develop the integration roadmap, coordinate cross-functional teams, and act as the technical and organizational bridge between design, process engineering, equipment, and operations. As process architect you will develop internal process flows that demonstrate the capability, reliability and predictability of the pilot line. You will work with external stakeholders to translate their product requirements into a process flow that can run on the equipment and processes that are available in the pilot line. Your focus is on optimizing process flows, ensuring quality and reliability, and driving collaboration across disciplines.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and maintaining the vertical integration roadmap, aligning with business strategy and technology goals.
  • Architect process flows, both for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinating with R&D and competence clusters to integrate new technologies into production.
  • Identifying bottlenecks and opportunities in process step integration and initiating improvement projects.
  • Designing new process flows and modules, applying methods such as SPC, FMEA, and DoE to improve yield, throughput, and reliability.
  • Leading and coaching a multidisciplinary integration team, fostering ownership, collaboration, and technical growth.
  • Acting as the escalation point for complex integration issues and providing expert guidance on process changes and releases.
  • Leading root cause analyses (8D) and implementing sustainable solutions.
  • Reporting integration progress, KPIs, and strategic proposals to management.
  • Aligning with customers on integration requirements and representing the team during audits and visits.

What we expect from you

You are a senior professional with a strong background in semiconductor or photonics manufacturing, experienced in process integration and cross-functional collaboration. You combine deep technical knowledge with leadership skills, and you thrive in environments where complex challenges require both strategic thinking and hands-on problem solving.

You also bring the following qualifications:

  • A completed MSc or PhD in physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in semiconductor or photonic process integration, across multiple competence areas (e.g. epitaxy, lithography, plasma, metallization, back-end).
  • Strong understanding of process flows, interfaces, and interdependencies in wafer-scale manufacturing.
  • Experience with statistical and analytical tools such as SPC, FMEA, DoE, and root cause analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and foster collaboration across engineering, operations, and equipment groups.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • A proactive, strategic, and problem-solving mindset, with the ability to balance short-term priorities and long-term goals.
