Experienced Consultant Economics of Renewable Energy Systems | Rijswijk

Want to make your mark on our time? Become an Experienced Consultant Economics of Renewable Energy Systems at TNO in Rijswijk!

What will be your role?

The need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels is greater than ever. The integration of sustainable energy sources together with storage and conversion is crucial for the continuous availability of energy. At TNO we take a holistic approach towards system transformation and the roll-out of renewable energy assets. A successful approach not only requires solutions that work technically, but also solutions that integrate into the natural environment, solutions that are accepted by the local communities and solutions that are bankable. Without a solid business case nothing is going to happen and the energy transition will come to a hold. In this context we are looking for an Experienced Consultant Economics of Renewable Energy Systems that can connect economic insights with technical innovation.

Your home base is the internationally diverse team of the Wind Energy research group. Together more than 40 qualified colleagues at our high-tech research sites in Petten and Rijswijk, you will share the ambition of integrating wind into an ultimately zero-carbon energy system and scaling up offshore wind production. We work together on numerous topics. We therefore need you to share your knowledge and innovative ideas, as we do. At both locations, you will find a professional, fun, and supportive atmosphere where you will be coached and encouraged to develop your full potential.

What are you going to do?

As a consultant, you will be a key link between our clients and multidisciplinary project teams. You will contribute to several research projects at different stages of development, from ideation to implementation. Your work will involve both technical depth and strategic oversight.

For example, in the morning, you might collaborate with project developers and market players to draft a proposal for a new initiative. In the afternoon, you'll brainstorm with colleagues across research groups on the integration of renewable energy sources—such as onshore and offshore wind and solar—with emerging technologies like hydrogen production, short- and long-duration energy storage, and system flexibility solutions. On another day, you may prepare for a meeting with a client or stakeholder or finalise a report by translating complex findings into actionable and accessible insights.

This particular role is aimed at understanding the risks of renewable energy systems and on de-risking/improving the business case for our clients. Understanding finance and investment decisions with insights into sustainable transition dynamics, aims to assist investors, project developers, and policymakers to identify and address the barriers that prevent green projects and ventures from scaling-up.

You will work on energy market dynamics, strategic decision making by market participants, and the impact of energy market design on investment conditions. The work will also focus on assessing the investability of renewable energy projects and translating complex market developments into actionable insights for policy and industry.

You won’t do this on your own, but you will be supported by a multi-disciplinary team with validated tools and expertise on which you can build.

What we expect from you

You are committed to accelerating the energy transition and passionate about renewable energy. By working closely with experts in a diverse team in various technical fields, you will be eager to learn from them and expand your own in-depth knowledge. Your entrepreneurship and networking skills will help you initiate new projects and create relevant consortiums. You rely on your excellent communication and presentation skills to convince colleagues and partners of your proposals.

Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • A Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant field such as applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, computer science, physics, or related disciplines such as energy economics or business economics
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience, such as working with clients and/or consultancy.
  • Experience in assessing business cases and risks of renewable energy projects, financial analysis, or project development in the energy sector.
  • Experience on support shaping the bankability of first-of-a-kind and scale-up projects and ventures. The focus is on de-risking investment cases by bridging technical knowledge with business case principles and connecting the right stakeholders to support projects to move to final investment decisions.
  • Understanding the energy market dynamics, strategic decision making by market participants, and the impact of energy market design on investment conditions.
  • Demonstrable experience of working on projects at organisations offering products or services in the field of renewable energy system integration.
  • Ability to translate complex and multidisciplinary analyses into actionable future business opportunities and investments insights in line with the TNO roadmap.
  • Excellent command of English, as you will be working in international teams and with international partners.
