Internship | Metasurface based Polarization Scramblers for Space Instruments

About this position

In general, radiometric instruments have different detection sensitivities for different states of the light polarization, depending on the instrument optical chain. To avoid losing the photons associated to a signal with a polarization for which the instrument is less sensitive, a polarization scrambler is positioned at its entrance, making in this way the instrument able to detect the signal independently of its original polarization: some of the photons will be detected with higher efficiency, while others with a lower efficiency, averaging out to the efficiency for unpolarized light. Unfortunately, the implementation of scramblers with “traditional” optical components (e.g. birefringent wedges) results in bulky and complex to manufacture devices. On the contrary, the use of nanopatterned metasurfaces could considerably simplify the realization of a scrambler with a consequent reduction of its volume, weight and realization costs; all these are very important factors for space technology.

What will be your role?

During the internship, the student will undertake the following activities:

  • Get familiar with the concept of polarization scramblers and their current state-of-the-art.
  • Study the theory and get introduced to the design of optical nanopatterned metasurfaces.
  • Assess different concepts of metasurface based scramblers.
  • After the selection of a preferred solution, he will proceed at its design/optimization, using electromagnetic modelling tools available at TNO.

During the internship project, student will be assisted by TNO staff members working on optical metasurfaces and space instruments.

What we expect from you

The candidate should have a good background knowledge of Electromagnetic Theory and Optics.
You should preferably have some experience with:

  • Commercial electromagnetic modelling tools (e.g. ANSYS HFSS and/or ANSYS LUMERICAL and/or CST STUDIO and/or COMSOL).
  • Programming in MATLAB/PHYTON

This internship is best suited for MSc final projects, with a duration of 6 to 9 months.
