Scientist Electromagnetics & Radar Signatures | The Hague
Contributing to safety and security through electromagnetic innovations, can you picture it? Become a Scientist Electromagnetics & Radar Signatures at TNO in The Hague.
About this position
The signatures of a (military) platform are all the physical properties of that platform that can be detected by a sensor. One example, is the radar signature. This signature has a major impact on detection, classification, and identification by enemy radar systems, making the platform vulnerable. Determining, reducing and managing this signature is therefore crucial to carrying out military operations as safely as possible.
What will be your role?
You will work in a team setting on knowledge development in the field of radar signatures for a special client: the Ministry of Defence. You will contribute to algorithms and models to predict or control signatures. In addition, there is room to work with measurement setups in the lab or in the field, to experimentally determine the signature of platforms and to validate the models.
The knowledge and technology developed, will give the Ministry of Defence insight into the signatures of its own platforms, enabling them to control and reduce these signatures, and make the right choices during operations. At the same time, it provides insight into the vulnerabilities of enemy platforms, which can be exploited for tactical advantage.
In various research projects, you will work closely with fellow researchers, the Ministry of Defence, and industrial partners. Your broad technical interest will come in handy here. Physical modelling, simulation, analysis and experimentation—all aspects will cross your path. In short: a unique position at the forefront of innovation in the defence domain.
What we expect from you
You are a versatile researcher who likes to dive deep into one or more topics and explore them thoroughly. You can translate theoretical concepts into practical models and algorithms, but you are also able to use these tools to execute detailed analyses. You turn the results of these type of complex scientific analyses into clear, actionable insights. You enjoy collaborating with colleagues and/or presenting your work to clients. You want to contribute directly and sustainably to safety and security through both short-cycle innovation and future-oriented research.
What else do you bring?
- A Master’s degree in (applied) physics, electrical engineering, or a similar field.
- Experience in executing complex scientific analyses, acquired for example during a graduation project or while obtaining a PhD diploma.
- Interest in one or more of the following areas: electromagnetic modelling, numerical physics, signal processing, meta-materials, instrumentation, and the drive to further specialize in these fields.
