Internship | Developing new materials for supercapacitors

The Netherlands, as well as the rest of the world, is currently experiencing a rapid change in its energy mix. Gas and coal plants used to supply the electricity market, and had stable and rapidly scalable outputs. However, with more and more renewable energy in the mix, there is more fluctuations in the supply that cannot always be matched to demand. This means that the development of new energy storage solutions are now more important then ever. One of the storage solutions we work on at TNO is the development of a new type of supercapacitor, that combines the benefits of traditional capacitors with batteries.

During this project of 6 to 9 months you will work on the material development of a new type of capacitor. This means that you will investigate new materials to improve the characteristics of the capacitor, such as the energy density, maximal power output and intrinsic resistance. Additionally, you will work on the integration of the material into a small scale prototype, to realize the material development in a device that can be tested in real-world conditions.

This project requires an inventive mindset and skills across multiple fields of science. Because the project requires expertise from different scientific backgrounds, you will be working in a team environment. It is therefore essential that you bring strong communicative skills, are able to think on your feet and can work comfortably both independently and in a team. Important to be aware of before applying:

• Before the start of the internship, the internship agreement from TNO needs to be signed. For students at a college or university based in the Netherlands, TNO uses the UNL-template (supplemented with a number of specific agreements from TNO). For students of foreign and MBO educational institutions, the TNO internship agreement applies. TNO does not sign any other internship agreements.
• Before the start of the internship, the educational institution will need to confirm in writing that:
  • 1) you are enrolled at the educational institution during the internship, and;
  • 2) the internship takes place as part of the programme of the study.
• The confirmation of educational institution takes place by signing the UNL template or forms prepared by TNO.
• Interns at TNO must be in possession of a Dutch residential address at the start of the internship. Performance of internship activities from abroad is not possible.
