Internship | Chemical Analysis: Extraction Optimization of Stabilizers in Propellant

About this position

For propelling charges, the stabilizer content is determined to ensure safety and operational reliability. These stabilizers are extracted from propellant and subsequently analyzed using UPLC-MS. Within this internship, the focus is on optimizing the extraction method of stabilizers from propellant. UPLC-MS is used as an analytical tool to quantitatively assess the quality and effectiveness of the extraction method. Relevant parameters and potential bottlenecks are critically evaluated to further improve the reliability, accuracy, and efficiency of the determination.

What will be your role?

You will independently carry out practical analyses and immerse yourself in the underlying principles of the analytical method. By understanding the method step by step, you will investigate where optimizations are possible and implement targeted improvements. Your work will include sample preparation, variation of extraction parameters, data analysis, and critical evaluation of results. Ultimately, you will deliver an improved, reliable method in which all steps are well substantiated.

You will work in the laboratory of the Research Group Munition Technology in The Hague Ypenburg. The laboratory team consists of approximately six analysts. Within this team, a wide range of analytical techniques is applied, and a high level of specialist knowledge is available. Although the department is broadly equipped, your focus will be entirely on optimizing the extraction method, using UPLC-MS as the analytical technique. You will be supervised by experienced colleagues in a professional, knowledge-driven working environment.

What we expect from you

You are able to set up and execute a research plan in a structured manner. In addition, you can critically evaluate results and adjust experiments accordingly. You work independently, accurately, and with concentration, have an eye for detail, and possess a practical and investigative mindset.

  • You are enrolled in an HBO (Bachelor’s) program in Analytical Chemistry.
  • Basic knowledge of liquid chromatography.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to logically understand the influence of sample preparation and analysis.
  • Safe working practices are a high priority for you.
