Research Scientist in Geodesy-Geomechanics | Utrecht

About this position

As a researcher in geodesy-geomechanics you will be working with experts to improve the use of InSAR satellite observations in studies of human-induced subsidence. Your role is to work with different teams of the Geological Survey of the Netherlands to develop workflows for data processing and geomechanical modelling of human-induced subsidence. You will be based in the Geomechanics Team of TNO’s Geoscience & Technology Department. Your work will be part of national and international projects for a range of clients, including business-to-business projects, national programs and European research projects.

What will be your role?

You are expected to develop software code around InSAR satellite data. With your passion for developing software codes and background in InSAR satellite observations you will contribute to existing workflows and develop new ones. Besides data processing you will also contribute to geomechanical modelling of human-induced subsidence. You will strengthen our research portfolios on groundwater management, mining activities, geothermal energy and energy storage. You will work in multidisciplinary project teams where tasks include research, writing proposals, reporting and preparing scientific publications in English. You will also help acquire new projects and network with clients. You will be part of a team with extensive expertise in geomechanics, notably on human-induced subsidence and induced seismicity. Being proficient in English, you can communicate well with the international team members of the geomechanics team.

  • Experience in InSAR data and signal processing
  • Experience in geomechanical modelling
  • Experience in coding and software development (preferably in Python)
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent track record in conducting research
  • Competent in writing high quality academic texts as well as easy-to-read and concise reports, proposals, and grants
  • Able to work independently, responsibly, and result-driven
  • Customer-oriented
  • Good communication skills
  • Interested in research as well as business-to-business (consultancy) projects
  • Interested in participating in acquisition of new projects

The selection process
