Climate & Air Quality Software Engineer

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Climate & Air Quality Software Engineer at TNO in Petten!

About this position

Climate change, air quality, and the energy transition play a huge role in defining, implementing, and monitoring policy. To properly design and implement policies, it is crucial to understand emissions and concentrations of gases and substances, at both regional and national level and ideally in real-time. At the Environmental Modelling, Sensing & Analysis (EMSA) department, we use measurement equipment and sensor networks to monitor the concentrations of various gases and particles in the air. As a software engineer, you will support EMSA’s researchers. You will process and visualise measurement data and help share the data with third parties.

What will be your role?

Researchers at EMSA measure and monitor concentrations of different gases and particles in the air in various locations and regions across the Netherlands. They also use mobile measurement systems and perform local emission measurements to monitor gases and substances such as nitrogen, greenhouse gases, and particulate matter. The data are validated and stored in databases, and conclusions are drawn from the results of model calculations. The results are then provided to third parties via web applications.

Your job is to maintain the IT systems and add new features. Your duties will include:

  • Implementing data pipelines to the cloud.
  • Making data from the cloud available to analysts.
  • Developing web applications (to present the data in a specific way).
  • Maintaining and extending data acquisition software to read and control measurement instruments.
  • Designing and implementing secure APIs.

What we expect from you

You have a broad background in software engineering, stay up to date with new developments, and are not afraid to dive deep to master a technology. You will be working at the office in Petten 2 to 3 days a week.

  • You are proficient in C#, Git, Python and ASP.NET.
  • You have experience with Azure SQL.
  • Experience with one or more of the following is a plus: Azure IoT Hub or other Azure products.
  • You experiment with generative AI and engage with it in a balanced and responsible way.
  • An affinity for climate, air quality, and/or the environment would also be an plus.
  • You have at least a higher professional education degree or equivalent ability in the field of software engineering or ICT.
  • You have good oral and written skills in English. Knowledge of the Dutch language would be a plus.
