Industrial Product Security

Cybersecurity

In the precision-focused world of industrial product engineering, security isn’t a feature. It's the prerequisite that determines whether an organisation remains a trusted partner, orpartner or becomes a vulnerable liability. And because every digital connection opens doors to both innovation and intrusion, even the most advanced technology now requires a new form of protection - one built directly into the product’s DNA. That’s exactly what we’re working on, including through our involvement in the Brabant House of Cyber.

Proactive protection as standard

For many organisations, cybersecurity is still a patchwork solution: vulnerabilities are only fixed after something goes wrong. Threats such as ransomware or intellectual‑property theft can endanger the entire business model. You need to stay ahead of attacks, not repair the damage afterwards. Products increasingly operate within larger production or information chains, where weak links simply aren’t acceptable. A standard solution no longer suffices.

Our research, in close collaboration with academic partners, means we’re preparing your systems for tomorrow’s threats, not just today’s. And our extensive partnerships with other high-tech companies means we’ll find the right solutions to your specific challenges, while being forever mindful of your bottom line, your competitive edge, your proprietary technologies, and your future ambitions.

Precision products require cybersecurity by design

High-tech manufacturing demands precision security that is customised to unique aspects of each product and system. Through cybersecurity by design, we embed protection and extensive testing into every new development. When next-generation sensor arrays or upgraded control software is added to a product, we can add the security controls that are as integral to the design as the performance specifications are.

With autonomous cyber resilience, we create systems that can monitor themselves, adapt to threats, and maintain operation even when under attack. We enable systems to defend themselves while they continue to operate, like the way the human immune system fights infection while the body is still performing other tasks.

TNO's areas of expertise in cybersecurity

When downtime means millions

In high‑tech environments, every minute of downtime counts. When one product fails, it disrupts an entire chain. Effective cybersecurity is therefore not only about protection; it’s about maintaining operational continuity.

Products designed to be secure from the start:

  • fail less often
  • require less maintenance
  • deliver consistent performance

Cybersecurity strengthens performance rather than slowing it down. The result: robust products that create long‑term value - a genuine competitive advantage.

The legacy challenge

Extraordinary industrial products and systems represent decades of innovation, billions of investment, and the cutting edge of what’s possible. They aren’t built in a day, and they aren’t replaced every few years. They are 20-, 30- or even 40-year investments designed to evolve through countless upgrades and modifications.

The very longevity that makes these products valuable, also makes them vulnerable. Each new component, module, and software update, and each new network connection creates potential entry points that weren’t considered in the original design. It is no longer about maintaining machines - companies are now required to maintain digital ecosystems that must remain secure across generations of technological change. TNO helps organisations deploy new technologies and find solutions to provide lifelong protection for legacy systems.

Brabant House of Cyber: building product security together

As a core partner within the Brabant House of Cyber, TNO works alongside the Province of Noord‑Brabant, BOM, Brainport Development, Avans, TU/e and a broad coalition of companies and institutions. Together, they are investing nearly €14.5 million in strengthening the digital resilience of Brabant-based companies. This public‑private collaboration unites the strengths of industry, government and education to structurally raise and future‑proof product security in the high‑tech sector.

TNO’s role: accelerating and scaling product security

Within the Brabant House of Cyber, TNO and TU/e are developing the Product Security Innovation Programme: a multi‑year initiative that helps companies build digital high‑tech products that are secure from the design phase onwards. The programme focuses on practical, applicable solutions - from secure design principles and test methods to technologies ready for immediate use in industrial environments. By working closely with high‑tech companies, cybersecurity specialists and educational institutions, TNO makes product security both achievable and scalable across the entire Brabant manufacturing ecosystem.

Build tomorrow’s competitive advantage

Tomorrow’s leaders are already investing in security that grows with their technology. They stand out through:

  • Unmatched reliability that customers can build their plans around.
  • Supply chain confidence that withstands global disruptions.
  • Innovation acceleration enabled by secure foundations.
  • Operational excellence that turns security from a cost center into a competitive edge.

We investigate, prove, design, and demonstrate the system security that your specific business requires. No assumptions, no generic solutions, no unnecessary risks to your operations. Every engagement we initiate is different, because every high-tech stakeholder is different. What unifies our approach is our commitment to building solutions that enhance, rather than constrain, engineering excellence.
