Tackling methane emissions

Methane emissions are increasingly recognized for their significant environmental impact, especially in light of the recent 2024 European Methane Regulation. To foster collaboration and knowledge exchange, TNO, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), and State Supervision of Mines (SodM) are hosting an international symposium including experts from Canada, Denmark, Germany, Norway, The Netherlands, The United Kingdom, and the USA. This symposium will delve into methane emissions from the seabed, both natural and anthropogenic (such as abandoned wells), examining their fate and quantifying fluxes.

Key topics

  • The offshore impact of the EU Methane Regulation
  • Origin and migration paths of methane
  • Causes of methane leakage related to wells (e.g., well integrity issues)
  • Measuring methane emissions in the North Sea (from various sources, including inactive wells and natural sites)
  • Methods to mitigate well leakages
  • Regulations and policies

Join scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders in discussing solutions to reduce methane emissions.
