The Netherlands is undergoing a major energy transition. Electrification, renewable energy and new technologies are rapidly reshaping the energy infrastructure. Smart networks form the backbone of a future-proof energy system: they enable the energy transition, ensure resilience, and at the same time reinforce the Dutch economy. Together with government, industry and market parties we develop innovations that balance supply and demand in real time.

The challenge

The Dutch electricity grid is becoming increasingly complex and interconnected. Space and resources are limited, while thousands of companies are waiting for grid connections — delaying growth and innovation.

Grid operators invest billions each year in strengthening and expanding the network. At the same time, the demand for sustainable energy is rising exponentially and the role of hydrogen, heat and CO₂ integration is growing.

Future-proof infrastructure

TNO collaborates with policymakers, academia, market parties and industry on smart networks for a future-proof energy system. By integrating and smartly coupling electricity, gas, hydrogen and CO₂ systems, networks become safer, more flexible and resilient. This includes both on-shore and off-shore systems, with attention to cross-border connections and AI-driven monitoring.

Hybrid energy supply

Smart networks combine renewables, storage and conversion technologies. TNO develops energy-management systems that accelerate renewable integration, reinforce business cases and make our energy supply more resilient and secure. Through pilots, demonstrations and data-driven insights, solutions are tested and scaled up to deliver direct impact on the energy transition.

An integral system perspective

A holistic systems approach to energy enables smart decision-making. Through systematic modelling and analysis, it becomes clear where flexibility adds the most value and where collaboration has the greatest impact. Smart networks therefore are not just technological innovations — they are an essential component of an efficient, future-proof energy system.

TNO and partners are working on smart networks that contribute to a future-proof energy system that is resilient, sustainable and economically strong.

Heat storage and local grids

Heating and cooling account for a large share of our energy use. Advanced heat-storage systems developed by TNO store energy when it is abundant and release it when needed — reducing peak demand and easing pressure on the grid. These innovations make local energy systems more efficient, reliable and sustainable, supporting a smarter and more resilient network.

Industry as engine of smart networks

Industry plays a key role in a future-proof energy system. By linking production, heat and electricity to the broader network, integrating digital control, storage and renewable supply, companies can lower costs, reduce emissions and strengthen competitiveness. Smart networks help industry not just adapt, but actively lead the energy transition.

Net zero energy solutions & Grid Congestion

The urgency to switch to sustainable energy sources is greater than ever. The government, grid operators, and policymakers face the challenge of making our society more sustainable, realizing the transition to a sustainable energy system, preventing congestion on the energy grid, increasing energy efficiency, and ensuring a smooth energy transition.

We provide research, develop innovations, models, and insights to tackle these challenges.
