Internship | Automatic Matching Network Layout Synthesis Based On Space Mapping

About this position

Impedance matching networks are crucial parts of an (integrated) power amplifier and have a big impact on both the performance and size of the amplifier. For the design of these matching networks on a circuit level, multiple techniques exist which enables the automatic synthesis to a large extend. The optimization of a power amplifier’s matching network, however, is traditionally time-consuming as it requires frequent incorporation of computational expensive electro-magnetic (EM) simulations for accurate layout characterization. Space-mapping is a technique that speeds up the optimization process by using a circuit model for rapid evaluation of the layout structures, with the circuit model being calibrated multiple times during the optimization process using EM-simulations to increase the model’s accuracy. This will enhance the power amplifier’s design cycle significantly.

What will be your role?

Developing a space-mapping framework in Keysight ADS for matching network layout synthesis. Activities involved are: investigating suitable circuit models, creation of automatic layout and EM-model generation, implementing and testing different space-mapping/optimization algorithms and applying the framework for matching network design based on electrical and spatial requirements.

What we expect from you

The candidate has the qualities to conduct research in a research environment with the help of specialists from the department. Requirements are: Knowledge of RF and preferably optimization, experience with CAD tools (e.g. Keysight ADS) and scripting.
