Consultant | Utrecht

Want to make your mark on our time? Come work as a Consultant at TNO in Utrecht.

About this position

Groundwater is a vital resource, essential for drinking water supply, agriculture, ecosystem conservation, mitigating land subsidence, and climate adaptation strategies. As we face major global challenges such as climate change, energy transition, urbanization, and resource scarcity, sustainable groundwater management is more important than ever.

What will be your role?

TNO is a leading player in geosciences. Within our Geological Survey of the Netherlands (GDN), we work on in-depth understanding of the subsurface and its responsible use. In the societal debate on utilization versus protection of the subsurface, knowledge of groundwater and shallow geology is crucial.

Our research focuses on themes such as groundwater protection, sustainable extraction, management and replenishment of aquifers, and the impact of geo-energy, land subsidence, and climate change on water resources. We combine advanced 3D modeling and groundwater analyses with innovative AI applications and develop 'digital twins' that also include the above-ground environment.

Additionally, we invest in the development of new measurement and monitoring techniques and innovative pilot projects, in collaboration with governments, knowledge institutions, and industrial partners. These technologies are indispensable in addressing complex societal challenges at the intersection of climate, water, energy, and spatial planning.

To strengthen our team, we are looking for a consultant with demonstrable knowledge of groundwater management. In this role, you will provide substantive expertise, initiate collaborative projects, and work on solutions for the sustainable use of our underground water resources.

What will you be doing?
In this role, you will work on the elaboration and development of innovation projects, R&D programs, and partnerships aimed at sustainable management of the subsurface and groundwater. You will focus on various crucial themes, such as groundwater monitoring and modeling, storage and recovery of aquifers, prevention of contamination, and the integration of groundwater into broader environmental and climate adaptation strategies. Additionally, you will address issues related to the influence of the subsurface on infrastructure, waterworks, and construction projects.

As a consultant, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing an innovation roadmap together with the relevant expertise groups.
  • Developing and managing strategic partnerships: expanding TNO's key accounts and developing long-term relationships with government agencies, water boards, knowledge institutions, and partners in the private sector.
  • Strengthening innovation ecosystems: building and nurturing an innovation ecosystem around groundwater research.
  • Supporting research and development: collaborating with TNO's groundwater scientists and other experts from other departments (AI, digital twins, etc.) to translate groundbreaking research into practical solutions for concrete issues.
  • Promoting sustainable practices: advocating for sustainable groundwater use and promoting the integration of groundwater management into broader environmental policies and energy systems.

What we expect from you

As a consultant, you play a key role in marketing TNO's technical expertise and innovative solutions. By leveraging TNO's wide range of scientific disciplines and decades of experience, you help shape the future of groundwater management. Important skills and qualifications include:

  • Education: a higher professional or university degree in hydrogeology, environmental engineering, geotechnics, geosciences, or a related field.
  • Work experience: at least 5 years of experience in a strategic consultancy role, with demonstrable experience in project development and public-private partnerships.
  • Sector knowledge: knowledge of groundwater management, including technical and regulatory aspects, and an established network in the Netherlands in groundwater management, environmental consultancy, geotechnical consultancy, or related sectors.
  • Focus on innovation: the ability to develop new propositions, with a strong affinity for R&D and technology-driven solutions in groundwater management.
  • Enthusiasm to work closely with experts in various teams to help them refine their propositions together with partners.
  • Excellent communication skills in both English and Dutch.

Join us in making a difference in the sustainable management of the shallow subsurface and groundwater and shaping the future of the Netherlands.
