Internship | Shared Semantic Resources as Digital Commons

About this position

TNO is an independent research and technology organization. We are a team specializing in semantic interoperability between organizations, particularly within Collaborative Network Organisations (CNOs) – networks of legally independent organisations collaborating towards common goals. We advise CNOs, contribute to the development of standards for effective data exchange, and build specialized tooling to support the governance of shared semantic assets.

What will be your role?

Effective collaboration within CNOs relies heavily on shared understanding, often codified in common semantic assets. Governing the development and maintenance of these assets is essential, but also challenging. Current best practices, like the Dutch BOMOS model, certainly provide structure and guidance to practitioners, but can we improve our theoretical understanding by explicitly viewing semantic assets as "knowledge commons"? Nobel laureate Elinor Ostrom developed influential principles for governing traditional commons (fisheries, forests); can these principles provide valuable insights for the governance of shared semantic assets within CNOs?

What we expect from you

  • Student in Industrial Engineering & Management, Business & IT, Management of Technology, Public Administration, or a related field with a strong affinity for socio-technical systems.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills.
  • Interest in governance, collaboration, standards, and information management.
  • Ability to work independently and structure complex information.
  • Proficiency in Dutch is beneficial for analyzing BOMOS and case materials.
