Internship | The role of oxidation catalysis in aftertreatment systems of methan

About this position

With IMO targets in place to decarbonize shipping, the maritime sector is looking for suitable low-carbon fuels. Methanol is a promising shipping fuel given its widespread availability and, despite some challenges, its excellent physicochemical properties. There are also tight emissions legislations to take into account, in particular for inland shipping (Stage V), requiring some form of aftertreatment for unburned gases and nitrogen oxides. However, there is unclarity about the suitability of standard diesel aftertreatment equipment for alternative fuels. In this project, we will investigate the performance of oxidation catalysts for methanol dual fuel engines to bring down levels of unburned hydrocarbons and aldehydes to comply with Stage V.

What will be your role?

You will conduct a literature survey on methanol combustion and aftertreatment. How does an aftertreatment system look for a methanol engine? What is known about the emissions profile of different methanol combustion concepts? What can we expect in terms of toxic emissions (methanol, formaldehyde)? And how well does an oxidation catalyst work for methanol-fueled engines? Using experimental data from the TNO single-cylinder maritime engine, you will investigate the changes in emissions under different operating parameter settings. Finally, you will construct a proposal on how to adapt TNO’s SIMCAT tool for research.

What we expect from you

  • You are coursing a master in a relevant field, for example automotive engineering or mechanical engineering.
  • Knowledge in MATLAB/Simulink.
  • You enjoy developing innovative solutions to technically challenging problems and have the right mix of intellectual curiosity and pragmatism.

What you'll get in return

You want an internship opportunity on the precursor of your career; an internship gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. • Possibility of eight hours of free leave per internship month (for a full-time internship).
  • A free membership of Jong TNO, where you can meet other TNO professionals and join several activities, such as sports activities, (work-related) courses or the yearly ski-trip.
  • Use of a laptop.
  • An allowance for travel expenses in case you don’t receive an OV-card.
