Scientist Air Quality & Optical signal modelling | Utrecht
Contributing to tomorrow’s world. Envision it. Become a scientific expert on atmospheric aerosols and signal propagation at TNO in Utrecht and The Hague.
What will be your role?
The Expertise Group utilizes atmospheric transport models (LOTOS-EUROS and DALES), which make it possible to model and monitor the composition, origin and concentrations of a wide range of substances in the air – such as particulate matter, reactive nitrogen species, ozone, etc. – anywhere in the world. In addition, we use satellite- and ground-based observations for evaluation and assimilation to improve our models.
The interplay of atmospheric composition to transmitted and received signals is a crucial element, which will be the focus of your work. AER also has the expertise to assist governments, policymakers and decision-makers in the private sector when it comes to transitioning to a more sustainable, cleaner and socioeconomically more desirable economy. Our expertise is also applied in other parts of TNO where atmospheric propagation is important e.g. free-space optical communication and infrared remote sensing. Our areas of focus and hence our staff are at the heart of debate in society.
We are looking for a (post-doctoral) researcher with expertise in radiative transfer modelling, remote-sensing, chemical transport modelling and/or atmospheric science to join our team at TNO AER. We have experienced growing interest for predicting the atmospheric conditions for optical applications in the defense domain due to geopolitical and technological developments. The successful candidate will also work on the application and interpretation of satellite data (e.g. SPEXone, EarthCARE, 3MI), which may be used either directly or in combination with our atmospheric chemistry transport model LOTOS-EUROS.
More information about the research-group can be found here.
What we expect from you
You are passionate about working with models and information systems. You have a good understanding of physical processes, methodologies behind both AQ models and remote-sensing observations, the limitations of both, and have a proven affinity with modelling optical characteristics. Moreover, you are eager to contribute to solving societal relevant environmental problems, just like the rest of team. You are not afraid to ask critical questions and are eager to tackle new challenges together with your colleagues.
You also have the following to offer:
- PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Earth sciences, or a similar field.
- Affinity with atmospheric chemistry and/or optical models.
- Strong programming skills (e.g. Python, Fortran) and/or able to handle large datasets.
- Contributed to European and/or national research programs.
- Excellent proficiency in Dutch (minimum C2 level) and English, both spoken and written.
