About this position

Radar systems are indispensable in the modern world. Whether it's (naval) ships, drones, aviation, or satellites, radars provide a reliable view of the surroundings—day and night, and in all weather conditions. At TNO’s Compact Radar Systems department, we possess unique expertise for developing state-of-the-art radar systems for the Space, ISR, SAR, and counter drones domain. This includes the technical expertise on RF-modules, FPGA/ embedded programming, and digital signal processing. What will be your role?

You will engage yourself with a new and exciting research frontier, that is Space Domain Awareness (SDA). With the current environment in the space in terms of large number of satellites and space debris, monitoring of space is now one of the critical requirements for national security.

You will start with radar signal processing, focusing on space object detection, tracking and classification, sensor data fusion, imaging algorithms, developing advanced data processing methods (e.g. implementing advanced AI/machine learning techniques). The signal processing work will further expand into other SDA capabilities as well, such as orbit and intent determination. The work contains both performing simulation and working with experimental data. TNO will aid you to get up to speed, with the aim of you becoming an expert in this field of SDA signal processing over the coming years.

In addition, you will also be part of the radar signal processing group in the department, where you can contribute to the broader signal processing work being done in various topics, for example, digital beamforming techniques, radar resource management, advanced waveform design for improved radar performance etc.

What we expect from you

Expertise:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering/Aerospace Engineering/Physics, or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering/Aerospace Engineering/Physics with one year of relevant industry experience.
  • Solid foundation in basic signal processing techniques (sampling theorem, filtering, frequency domain processing, statistical signal processing etc.).
  • At least a working knowledge in radar systems or aerospace environment.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python.

The following expertise is considered a plus:

  • Experience in radar signal processing specifically.
  • Knowledge in space domain awareness/space situational awareness.
  • Several years of relevant work experience.
  • Excellent commandment of the English (and preferably also Dutch) language, both spoken and written.

  • You bring creative ideas to the table and know how to inspire colleagues and stakeholders with your initiatives.
  • You can clearly explain the complex details of data and signal processing to clients and other parties.

Work Environment:

  • You are comfortable working within the defense domain.
  • You are willing to work at the office in The Hague at least three days a week to ensure effective collaboration.

The selection process

Please apply before the 3th of December, 2025. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The preliminary interview takes place on the 11th of December, 2025. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.

The selection process may include an online assessment and a reference check.

A certificate of Conduct (VOG) is required before starting a new job at TNO.
