Experienced Scientist Source Apportionment of atmospheric pollutant concentrations | Utrecht

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Experienced Scientist at TNO in Utrecht!

About this position

Contributing to tomorrow’s world. Envision it. Become Scientist Source Apportionment at TNO in Utrecht.

What will be your role?

We are looking for a scientist with expertise in air pollution modelling. Do you have a special interest in attributing pollutants and their negative health impact to their source of origin using chemical transport models? Come join our team at TNO’s Air Quality & Emissions Research.

Our research portfolio is increasing on nitrogen, particulate matter and ozone monitoring and their source apportionment to help governments make informed and efficient legislative decisions. The capabilities to trace pollutants back to their source of origin in chemical transport models provide a unique opportunity to determine the effect of emission reductions and effectiveness of abatement strategies aimed at improving air quality and thereby the health of the population. At TNO simulations are performed on a daily basis to determine the countries and sectors of origin for pollution in the atmosphere, that are displayed on TOPAS - Air Quality Modeling TOPAS (dashboard) (tno.nl) and TOPAS-NL website and are included in the European Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) policy support service. As Scientist Source Apportionment you will further develop and apply these modeling tools to meet societal challenges and help get a grip on leading causes of air pollution.

The AER (Air Quality & Emissions Research) Expertise Group analyses the impact of human activity on the environment and human health and is part of the Energy and Material Transition Unit.
The group has at its disposal data from state-of-the-art equipment (satellites and measurement networks on the ground) as well as numerical models (e.g. LOTOS-EUROS), which make it possible to calculate and trace the composition, origin and expected distribution of a wide range of substances in the air – such as particulate matter, ammonia, nitrogen-dioxide, ozone, etc. – and to reach verdicts on air quality (anywhere in the world). AER also has the requisite expertise to assist government policymakers and decision-makers in the private sector when it comes to transitioning to a more sustainable, cleaner and socioeconomically more desirable economy. Our areas of focus and hence our staff are at the heart of debate in society.
