What will be your role?
Since the invasion of Ukraine, the geopolitical situation has become more volatile than ever, demanding rapid innovation. TNO plays a key role in this as a knowledge institute for Defense & Security, with more than a thousand specialists working on national and European security.
The Acoustics and Underwater Warfare division brings together acoustic expertise and primarily works for the Royal Netherlands Navy. The Underwater Operations & Seabed Security department focuses on research into autonomous underwater systems, for example, for mine detection using drones, anti-submarine warfare, and the protection of critical infrastructure. We develop advanced acoustic sensors and data processing for environmental awareness and model performance against underwater threats under various conditions.
As a software engineer, you will typically be active in multiple applied research and development (R&D) projects to develop solutions for our customers. You cooperate with other highly motivated programmers and scientists of your team. When needed you take the lead in designing and developing software tools. No two projects are the same, so expect lots of opportunities to develop yourself further.
Your activities will include the following:
- Software development for demonstrators at sea, showcasing new technologies;
- Leading (sub) teams of other software engineers, as well as participating in projects as a team member;
- Discussing with scientists to help realize their ideas into demonstrators;
- Writing software documentation and test reports;
- Stimulating cooperation with colleagues.

What we expect from you
Besides being passionate about the work we carry out, you recognise yourself in the following profile:
- You have a MSc or PhD in a technical field, such as computer science, (applied) physics, astronomy, (electrical) engineering or geophysics;
- You have at least 3 years experience with designing and developing software within projects;
- You have experience with developing software in Python, Matlab and/or C++;
- You are proactive and assertive. You feel responsible for the work within a project and make sure things get done;
- You are a creative problem solver, result-oriented, have a clear and convincing communication style;
- You are able to take the lead, as well as join existing teams as a team member;
- You have a clear affinity with applied R&D. Experience with signal processing and algorithm development is an advantage;
- You like working in teams towards a common goal;
- You are open to broaden your view, curious to learn, and willing to help others to do the same.

The selection process
Please apply before the 6th of April, 2026. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The preliminary interview takes place on the 13th of April, 2026. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.
The selection process may include an online assessment and a reference check.
A certificate of Conduct (VOG) is required before starting a new job at TNO.
As you will be working for clients in the domain of defence and security, a Certificate of No Objection issued by AIVD (the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service) is mandatory. This means you will have to undergo a security screening. Read more about security screening.
