SUPREME: Scaling superconducting quantum technology for Europe

Status

2026 - ongoing

Partners

VTT (Finland), TNO and partners, universities, leading research institutes, and industrial players

SUPREME (SUPeRconducting European quantuM pilot line) is one of six flagship European quantum pilots aimed at accelerating the industrialisation of superconducting quantum technologies. Co‑funded by the European Union and national funding agencies, the project brings together 23 leading partners from eight EU Member States to develop scalable, stable, and accessible superconducting quantum technologies for industry and academia.

The SUPREME consortium combines expertise from research organisations, academia, large enterprises, and innovative SMEs across Europe. Coordinated by VTT (Finland), partners include TNO, universities, leading research institutes, and industrial players active across the superconducting quantum value chain.

TNO’s role: enabling industrial‑grade superconducting quantum devices

As a core research and technology organisation within SUPREME, TNO contributes its deep expertise in fabrication, metrology, testing, and characterisation of superconducting devices. TNO’s work is focused on strengthening the technological foundations required for reliable, repeatable, and scalable production of quantum chips, an essential step toward industrial deployment.

By advancing dedicated tooling and characterisation methods, TNO helps partners improve device stability, yield, and reproducibility, bridging the gap between lab‑scale breakthroughs and industrial manufacturing. This contribution directly supports the project’s ambition to reach Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 and Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) 6 for key superconducting quantum processes.
