SPINS: Accelerating semiconductor‑based quantum chips for Europe

Status

2026 – ongoing

Partners

25 leading European partners from research and technology organisations, industry and academia

SPINS (Semiconductor Pilot line for Industrial Quantum NanoSystems) is one of six flagship European quantum pilots established under the EU Chips Act to accelerate the industrial deployment of quantum technologies. This initiative is co‑funded by the European Union’s Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) together with national and regional authorities from participating Member States.

Coordinated by imec, SPINS brings together 25 leading European partners from research and technology organisations, industry and academia. Together, they aim to close the gap between advanced quantum research and manufacturable, scalable quantum processors, strengthening Europe’s leadership and technological sovereignty in quantum computing.

TNO’s role: advancing metrology for Ge/GeSi quantum devices

Within SPINS, TNO plays a key role in strengthening the Ge/GeSi pilot line by contributing its expertise in metrology, device characterisation, and cryogenic testing. TNO focuses on developing advanced metrology methods to assess and optimise device fabrication processes, supporting the industrialisation of semiconductor‑based quantum chips.

In close collaboration with imec and other SPINS partners, TNO designs new test structures and characterises short‑loop devices at both room temperature and cryogenic conditions. This enables rapid and reliable benchmarking of different fabrication approaches against key performance and quality requirements, accelerating learning cycles within the pilot line.
