When working with asbestos, the release of fibres can present a hazard to both the worker and the environment. Exposure to asbestos fibres in the clean-up of products that contain asbestos must be restricted in order to minimise risks to health. TNO collaborates with various stakeholders on innovative solutions to enable people to work in a healthy environment and limit risks to both people and their surroundings.

In the TNO team that studies asbestos and asbestos exposure, experts come from a variety of knowledge fields such as work hygiene, exposure assessment, risk assessment, asbestos analysis and sensor technology. TNO’s multidisciplinary character means that we can add value in different ways to the study of asbestos-related issues and technological innovation. Our scientific research is both thorough and objective. The partners with whom we work in our projects range from policymakers, industry associations and industry to other commercial parties, regulators and educational institutes. We also apply our knowledge to the development of standards and certification related to asbestos.

Exposure assessment & management

Identifying exposure and exposure factors is done through metrology studies or modelling exposures. TNO is able to investigate the effectiveness of management measures. To effectively measure both indoor and outdoor exposure, TNO can develop metrology strategies and carry out metrology studies, if necessary for specific exposure scenarios. TNO also has experience of developing and managing exposure databases created from measured data, among other things, and drafting safe working methods and protocols. Asbestos analysis

In recent decades TNO has become a specialist in the analysis of asbestos and, to this end, has state-of-the-art analysis facilities at its disposal. TNO is also author of many national and international standards in this field and has been involved for many years as a reference laboratory in proficiency testing. Therefore, TNO  can act as a knowledge expert and can be called on in all kinds of analyses of asbestos in different matrices, such as air, water or material. Technological innovations for the asbestos branch

Apart from the use of regular methods, TNO develops and encourages innovative methods to measure exposure to and characterise asbestos fibres, including on-site techniques. TNO also studies the effectiveness of technical innovations in managing or reducing exposure during the processing of asbestos, another important area in view of the amount of asbestos waste that will increase in the coming years due, in part, to the ban announced on asbestos roofs. The question is whether the existing dump sites will be sufficient to safely cater for this quantity of cleaned up asbestos. Moreover, given all the safety issues, the dumping of asbestos is not considered a sustainable option for the future. TNO is therefore working on new, sustainable processing methods and processes, supporting initiatives that facilitate the innovative processing of asbestos. Read more about other innovations here.
