Time to accelerate healthcare innovations

By 2040, 3 million healthcare professionals will be needed to support everyone with care needs. Staff shortages, an ageing population and rising numbers of patients with one or more chronic conditions are putting the system under pressure. Waiting times are increasing, and one in three healthcare workers leaves the sector within a year. If we don’t act now, quality care will become inaccessible and unaffordable. It’s time for smart solutions that truly work.

At TNO, we accelerate the implementation of innovations in healthcare. The technologies exist, but they don’t automatically move from the drawing board to real-world practice. We ensure smart deployment of technology, practical application, and, as an independent party, we drive change.

How TNO helps advance healthcare

Healthcare faces a shortage of staff. TNO supports with labour-saving and assistive technologies that reduce workload, such as medical wearables; smart, portable sensors that enable remote care and allow patients to recover at home after surgery. Or consider the opportunities offered by AI applications and robotics. The goal: keeping quality care accessible, even with fewer staff.

Smart use of AI can make healthcare more efficient. TNO develops safe and reliable ways to deploy AI, so diseases are detected earlier, patient care improves, and individuals gain more control over their health. This means we will soon know better who needs which care at what time, enabling further personalisation of treatments and services.

Technology only has impact when people trust it and are willing to use it. TNO studies the effects of innovations and supports the adoption and scaling of solutions. How do patients and healthcare professionals experience a care robot? How do we ensure human-centred, reliable AI applications? We make sure innovations are truly implemented in practice.

To live longer in good health, a healthy lifestyle is often the best medicine. Together with partners, TNO works to reduce lifestyle-related conditions such as diabetes and obesity. We are committed to embedding lifestyle into medical care, enabling people to live not just longer lives, but healthier ones.

The first 1,000 days of a child’s life – from pregnancy to around age two – are crucial for healthy development. TNO helps improve care during this early period. For example, by giving healthcare professionals better insight into how babies and young children grow and develop. Our approach also focuses on strengthening the resilience of children and their parents. With this broad perspective, we contribute to a promising start for all children, a healthier society and, ultimately, lower healthcare costs.
