Demonstrations of automated driving and charging for logistics at Maasvlakte
The development of automated electric driving and charging is making significant strides. This was evident today during the Automated & Electric Trucking event at APM Terminals on Maasvlakte II. The event was part of the MAGPIE project, co-funded by the European Horizon 2020 programme. There was a demonstration, including a ride in a self-driving electric DAF truck which was also charged by a Rocsys robot.

Presentations on developments in automated and electric road transport
Representatives from companies in various international port areas, municipal and national governments, as well as partners from the European PIONEERS project were present. They received briefings on the role of automated and electric transport in reducing CO2 emissions from transport in and around ports, particularly in Rotterdam.
Other topics discussed included how automated electric driving fits into the regulatory framework in the Netherlands, current developments in both electric and automated freight transport, potential benefits and challenges, activities within the MAGPIE project, and prospects for implementation and scaling up in logistics operations.
The second part of the event featured an interactive presentation of the self-driving electric DAF truck and the Rocsys automatic charging system. Attendees then had the opportunity to ride in a self-driving electric DAF truck and witnessed the vehicle being charged by a Rocsys robot.
Automation: the future of transport
The demonstration at Maasvlakte II was a significant milestone in automating logistics operations at industrial sites and paves the way for new applications of automated trucks in industrial zones and on public roads in the long term.
By automating transport, it is possible to plan more efficiently, reduce vehicle energy consumption, and better utilise charging infrastructure.
