The energy transition is entering a new phase in which electricity becomes the dominant energy carrier. The growth of solar PV, e‑mobility, air conditioning and the electrification of industry is driving a rapid increase in demand. At the same time, the electricity grid is under increasing pressure. Scaling up façade‑integrated PV in the built environment offers a key opportunity to add additional renewable generation capacity and to distribute electricity production more evenly throughout the day. Solar PV has the potential to become the largest source of renewable energy, provided the technology is also designed and deployed in a circular way.

From aesthetic custom design to circular scale‑up

This project focuses on the industrialisation and large‑scale deployment of aesthetically printed, customised solar panels for façades. The panels are modular, flexible in application and fully recyclable. The project team of the Circular Multicolour Façade PV Factory works together on critical aspects such as fire safety, efficient façade integration and smart compartmentalisation for easy installation.

In addition, the consortium is developing a digital design tool that enables architects and designers to quickly and intuitively create bespoke, creative façade designs, with integrated solar energy as a natural part of the concept.

Development and assurance

Under the leadership of Kameleon Solar, the project team is developing the entire value chain for next‑generation façade PV: safe, reliable, multicolour and 100% circular. TNO supports the project by ensuring quality control of the solar panels and by testing and validating innovative solutions that enable full recyclability.
