Diamond characterization and Quantum device prototyping

Thema:
Quantum Computing Devices development

Diamond is a very versatile material that is used in a variety of quantum applications. TNO supports the quantum industry with a characterization facility for diamond material and with engineering support to bring prototypes of diamond-based quantum devices to life.

Diamond-based quantum devices

The development of diamond-based quantum devices pivots around the quality of lab-grown synthetic diamond and of the color centers embedded within the diamond lattice. Those color centers, for example nitrogen vacancy centers, are used as qubits with unique properties that are allowing applications in quantum computing, sensing and communication.

Testfacility for diamond-based device characterization

TNO provides a unique facility for the characterization of raw diamond material, of nanofabricated diamond substrates and devices. The quantum properties of qubits based on color centers in diamond are analysed thanks to a specifically designed lab with state-of-the-art equipment:

  • Wavelength-Selective Confocal Microscope
  • Single photon detectors and photon counting electronics
  • Tuneable microwave source
  • Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements
  • Application of static magnetic field vectors

With a long heritage in equipment manufacturing, TNO has already manufactured several quantum instruments based on nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. The development of such instruments included the design of optical, electrical and mechanical sub-systems and the nanofabrication of diamond to allow for the creation of on-chip electrical and optical structures that increase both performance and scalability. TNO builds diamond quantum devices using its unique nanofabrication facility at the Van Leeuwenhoek Laboratorium (Cleanroom Class 100), which includes state-of-the-art lithography, wet and dry processing, and inspection tools.
