Bas van Aken

Bas is a scientist who, after several international university appointments, joined ECN, now TNO Solar Energy. His motivation is to bring the energy transition one step closer through measurements and simulations.
Bas researches the impact of solar farm designs on both the electrical and economic yield, as well as the impact on the surrounding environment. His background in module technology helps to better understand how bifacial and back-contact modules perform in solar energy systems.
The focus there is on preventing nuisance glare and ensuring sufficient light and water availability for photosynthesis. With sufficient light (and water), enough plant growth is maintained to preserve soil quality.
Using solar tracking systems or vertical installations with sufficient spacing, it is possible to combine agriculture with solar panels. This leads to a complex interaction, but also offers opportunities for the agricultural sector and societal acceptance.
