SPDT Engineer Ultra-Precision Optics Manufacturing | DELFT

Want to make your mark on our time? Become an SPDT Engineer at TNO in Delft!

About this position

At TNO’s Optics Manufacturing group, we create ultra-high-end, one-off optical components for space, semiconductor and scientific use, often pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Our process blends optical design, ultra-precision machining and high-accuracy metrology in iterative, project-specific workflows. As an SPDT Engineer, you will work at the crossroads of machining, measurement and engineering judgement, actively shaping processes and collaborating closely with specialists. The role demands independent thinking, openness to challenge and a readiness to adapt solutions based on data and multidisciplinary teamwork.

What will be your role?

As a SPDT engineer you:

  • Perform Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT) to manufacture spherical, aspherical and freeform optical surfaces.
  • Program, set up and operate ultra-precision SPDT machines for one-off and prototype components.
  • Assess manufacturability in early project stages, including tolerances, deformation risks, fixturing concepts and process feasibility.
  • Develop machining strategies and tooling concepts tailored to specific optical and metrological requirements.
  • Perform in-process and post-process measurements using high-accuracy metrology (e.g. profilometry, interferometry, CMM-based methods).
  • Translate metrology results into corrective actions in machining and process planning.
  • Contribute to the design of interfaces, fixtures and mirror blanks, taking manufacturing constraints explicitly into account.
  • Document process iterations, decisions and results to support learning and reproducibility.
  • Collaborate intensively with optical and mechanical engineers to resolve complex, non-standard challenges.
  • Maintain machines and tooling, and perform root-cause analysis when performance deviates.

You will work on unique optical components for leading organisations such as ESA, NASA, Airbus, ESO and high-tech industry partners. This role offers a rare opportunity to operate at the frontier of ultra-precision manufacturing, where learning happens primarily through practice, experimentation and close collaboration.

We offer a technically demanding environment with a high degree of autonomy, where expertise is built over time and intellectual curiosity is essential.

What we expect from you

To be succesful in this role you bring:

  • A background in precision engineering, instrument manufacturing, fine-mechanical technology, applied physics or similar (MBO+/HBO, depending on experience).
  • At least 3 years of professional experience with ultra-precision machining or advanced CNC processes; SPDT experience is a strong asset.
  • Strong ability to read, interpret and create technical drawings.
  • Experience with CAD software; CAM experience is a plus.
  • Comfortable working with expensive, high-value components and equipment.
  • Analytical mindset with an understanding of material behaviour, surface generation and error sources.
  • Able to work carefully, methodically and quality-driven, without losing sight of the broader engineering context.
  • Communicates clearly within multidisciplinary teams and is willing to question assumptions — including their own.
  • Proficient in English; Dutch is a plus.

Preferred (Not Mandatory):

  • Experience with advanced optical metrology (interferometry, profilometry, wavefront analysis).
  • Experience with corrective finishing techniques such as MRF.
  • Experience combining measurement data directly with process or toolpath optimisation.
