What will be your role?
The intermittency of the renewable energy resources such as solar and wind calls for the development of low-cost and scalable energy storage technologies in the form of batteries. Future road to commercialization of rechargeable batteries should address key points of low cost, safety and high performance, simultaneously. Aqueous rechargeable batteries have favorable characteristics of low cost, high safety and environmental friendliness. Among them, Redox Flow Batteries (RFB’s) have a prominent ability to tailor the energy density independently from the power output and thus have gained increased attention. You will be provide support in the fabrication and testing of a novel RFB concept developed at TNO. In addition, you will learn about flow chemistry, electrode preparation and characterization employing electrochemical methods such as EIS and CV.

What we expect from you
You are an enthusiastic student looking for a 6-9 months unique research opportunity to complete a Master’s thesis. You have a chemical engineering, chemistry or material science/engineering background and you are eager to learn about electrochemistry, electrochemical methods and fluid dynamics. You are pro-active and independent with good communication skills in English. You can work independently while interacting with a diverse team of scientists/engineering/technicians with a wide variety of expertise to make up for a great learning experience. Practical laboratory experience is necessary for this position.
Among others, your main tasks will be:
- Conduct literature search to benchmark the know-how present as state-of-art.
- Reactor fabrication and testing.
- Participate in group meetings, provide feed-back, discuss results, and propose solutions.
