At TNO Buildings, Infrastructure & Maritime (BI&M), we work on tangible solutions to major social issues for a safe and sustainable built environment. This is no mean feat, considering the increasing burden on the road and waterway network, the enormous housing challenge, and emission issues during a time of major energy and climate transitions. Digitalisation is making an increasingly important contribution to solving these issues in the Building and Infrastructure sector. To realise our ambitions in this area, we are looking for several colleagues with different fields of expertise and roles to strengthen the current Digitalisation team.

What will be your role?

As a project manager, you will work on complex research projects and consultancy assignments of the Structural Reliability department. All projects are related to digitalisation in the construction industry, but the topics involved are diverse. Examples include developing a new circular asphalt mixture, predicting the lifespan of a storm surge barrier, or finding more reliable calculation methods to determine the structural safety of monumental structures. As a project leader, you will manage project teams of, on average, three to eight subject-matter experts. In terms of content, you’re more involved from the sidelines. Your task is to manage the project and to stimulate and support your team.

Projects are successfully delivered under your management. You ensure that we adhere to contract agreements and budgets, and that clients are satisfied. Even if the outcome is not the initially envisioned solution. In addition, you focus on good publicity and encourage a maximum learning effect among project staff. How you approach all this is up to you. You’ll have a lot of freedom to work in the way that suits you. There are also opportunities to spar and exchange experiences with other project managers.

On average, project managers at Structural Reliability run about four to eight projects or programmes at a time. This entails a great deal of variety! As an experienced project leader, you will be dealing with the larger and more complex projects. For example, you’ll work on multidisciplinary projects that transcend your team, department, or even unit. Or prestigious projects in which we collaborate with other research institutions in a European consortium. In short, plenty of room for you to grow as a project manager.

How do you want to contribute to tomorrow's world? How big can your impact be? Come and work at TNO and envision it.

What we expect from you

You’re a real fixer and motivator, who enjoys the challenge of getting complex projects on track and bringing them to a successful conclusion together with a team. You speak the language of the technical professionals, but you also know how to be persuasive when communicating with clients. Presenting research results, for example, is something we can safely leave to you. You are a networker, team player (inspirational leader), and have strong communication skills. You’re familiar with societal issues such as soil subsidence, earthquakes, structural safety, and flood protection. It is also helpful if you can quickly find your way around administrative systems, so that you can properly monitor your projects.
Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:
  • A university master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience, with a minimum of 4 years as a project manager in a research environment. You have experience managing projects in public-private partnerships.
  • You have experience conducting research in the maritime, construction, or infrastructure sectors.
  • You have experience with complex issues, vision development, digitalisation in construction and infrastructure.
  • You are preferably IPMA-certified. If you do not yet have the certification, you can do the training with us.

What you’ll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3.700,- and € 5.800,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

Perhaps you would like to grow your career in the direction of commerce or consultancy? Or would you like to become a project manager? Immerse yourself in sustainable innovations? Or carve out a career as a technical expert?

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:
  • A good pension scheme.
  • Travel allowance or a bike.
  • Possibility of a permanent contract.
  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • 28 days annual leave and 5 compensation days under the reduction in working hours scheme (ATV, arbeidstijdverkorting) on a full-time basis.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Flexible working hours and the possibility of working from home.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
