Technical Specialist Ballistic Research
Make your mark on the world. Join TNO as a Technical Specialist Ballistic Research in Ypenburg (The Hague)!
About this position
As a Technical Specialist Ballistic Research at TNO in Ypenburg, you directly contribute to saving lives. You test and develop innovative materials and equipment that offer protection against explosions and ballistic threats. Whether it concerns bullet resistant vests, vehicles, or concrete structures: your work has a direct impact on the safety of military personnel, police officers, and civilians — in the Netherlands and beyond.
What will be your role?
As part of the Personal Protection and Explosive Safety (PPES) department, you will be responsible for the preparation, execution, and reporting of ballistic experiments in our Laboratory for Ballistic Research (LBR). The LBR houses various test facilities primarily focused on large caliber weapons, small caliber weapons, and vehicle testing. You work within a team of specialists and will have the opportunity to grow into a fully qualified range safety officer.
You will contribute to projects aimed at improving protective materials — such as bullet resistant vests, helmets, vehicles, and concrete structures — against ballistic impact and blast pressure. You will also participate in testing protective equipment that is used by government organizations. All work follows international (NATO) standards and adheres to the ISO 17025 quality requirements. Our work is project based.
You prepare and carry out the measurements, handling research weapons and various types of ammunition in a safe and controlled manner. During experiments, you work closely with colleagues to solve any issues that arise. When necessary, you consult with the TNO project manager or the client, who is often present during the tests. You ensure that research results are delivered to our clients. Reporting, either independently or together with colleagues, can be part of your responsibilities.
What we expect from you
We are looking for someone with a hands on mindset — someone who enjoys working with mechanical setups and prefers working in a team environment. You work with precision and attention to detail during experiments and, where applicable, during reporting. You are used to working methodically, troubleshooting issues, and thinking proactively about improvements and processes. If you have gained experience with shooting sports or ballistics in your free time — for example, as a sport shooter — that is considered a plus, as it demonstrates affinity with the field and familiarity with safety procedures.
What you bring:
- A completed vocational education (MBO level 4) in a technical field, such as mechatronics, civil engineering, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or comparable.
- Experience in a technical, hands on role (not an office job) is an advantage. Experience in sectors such as defence, machine construction, offshore, or automotive is welcome.
- We work with both Dutch speaking and English speaking clients. Therefore, proficiency in Dutch at B2 level and English at B1 level (speaking and writing) is required.
- The Ministry of Defence is one of our key clients, so affinity with their mission is important.
- Safety, quality, efficiency, and confidentiality are essential to our work — and to your role.
- You will follow the internal TNO training programme to become a certified range safety officer, including an internal exam. This exam includes a theoretical component. You may also obtain a First Aid (EHBO) certificate.
- You hold a driving licence (category B), and preferably a forklift certificate. If you do not have a forklift licence yet, TNO will arrange training.
What you'll get in return
Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 2,700 and € 3,400 (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.
TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:
- An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
- The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
- 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
- An employer that values and encourages diverse talent, with initiatives like the Female Leadership Program, our Rainbow Community and round tables on inclusion topics.
- We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
- Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
- Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 of 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
- Networking opportunities and great activities organized by Jong TNO.
- A good pension scheme.
