R&D scientist Micro-optical Assembly and Packaging | Nijmegen

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a R&D scientist Micro-optical Assembly and Packaging at TNO in Nijmegen!

About this position

TNO is the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research. As an independent research institute, TNO connects science and industry to accelerate innovation and translate knowledge into practical, scalable solutions. By combining deep technical expertise with a strong application focus, TNO supports companies and governments in addressing complex technological and societal challenges.

What will be your role?

Within the field of integrated photonics, TNO plays a leading role through two pioneering initiatives: the Photonic Integration Technology Center (PITC) and the Chip Integration Technology Center (CITC). Both centres are founded by TNO together with industrial and technology partners.

PITC focuses on the development of integrated photonic chips for applications in sectors such as mobility, healthcare, and communications, enabling innovations in areas such as road safety, health monitoring, and secure, energy-efficient data transmission. CITC focuses on advanced semiconductor integration and chip packaging technologies, enabling compact and versatile photonic systems.
Together, PITC and CITC provide a unique environment where photonic design, chip integration, and advanced packaging technologies come together. This environment enables cutting-edge research and development aimed at translating photonic innovations into scalable industrial solutions.

To strengthen our activities in photonic integration and packaging technologies, we are looking for a Scientist Micro-Optical Assembly & Packaging.

As Scientist Micro-Optical Assembly & Packaging, you will contribute to the development of advanced optical assembly and packaging solutions for integrated photonic systems. Your work focuses on enabling reliable optical interfaces and scalable packaging technologies that allow photonic chips to be integrated into practical systems and industrial applications.
You will work at the interface of integrated photonics, optical design, materials science, and advanced chip packaging technologies.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams within PITC and CITC, including experts in photonic design, semiconductor processing, materials engineering, and system integration.

Working in an advanced R&D environment, you will contribute to the development of micro-optical assembly processes, optical interconnects, and packaging solutions that enable high-performance and reliable photonic devices. Your work supports the translation of research results into scalable technologies for industrial partners and future photonic applications.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and develop optical interconnects and coupling solutions for integrated photonic systems;
  • Develop and optimise micro-optical assembly and packaging processes for photonic components and devices;
  • Investigate and improve optical coupling efficiency and interface performance between photonic chips and external optical systems;
  • Perform optical testing, characterisation, and evaluation of photonic interfaces and packaging solutions;
  • Contribute to research and development projects in integrated photonics in collaboration with industrial partners and international stakeholders;
  • Translate research results and experimental findings into reliable and scalable photonic packaging solutions;
  • Document and communicate technical results through technical reports, scientific publications, and project presentations;
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across photonics design, device fabrication, materials science, and system integration.

What we expect from you

You are a hands-on scientist with a strong analytical mindset and a solid interest in integrated photonics and advanced chip packaging technologies.

You bring:

  • A Master’s degree or PhD in Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, Materials Science, or a related scientific discipline;
  • Several years of experience working in integrated photonics, optical design, or micro-optical assembly;
  • Experience with advanced packaging technologies, such as flip-chip assembly or wafer-level packaging is a big plus;
  • Experience with optical modelling tools such as Zemax, Lumerical, or similar simulation environments;
  • Hands-on experience with optical testing, measurement, or metrology equipment;
  • Experience analysing experimental data and presenting technical results through reports or presentations;
  • The ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary research teams;
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

What We Offer:

  • A collaborative and international R&D environment with photonics experts;
  • The opportunity to contribute to the next generation of integrated photonics packaging;
  • Close collaboration with leading industrial partners;
  • Access to state-of-the-art research and development facilities;
  • A strong focus on knowledge sharing, innovation, and professional development.
