Experienced Scientist Air Quality and Deposition Modelling | Utrecht
Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Scientis Air Quality and Deposition Modelling at TNO in Utrecht!
About this position
Within the Energy and Material Transition (EMT) Unit, the research-group AER (Air quality and Emissions Research) analyses the impact of human activity on air quality and atmospheric deposition to ecosystems. The Research Group develops state of the art emission and chemistry transport models (LOTOS-EUROS and DALES) and validates these against ground-based observations and novel satellite products, which make it possible to predict and trace the composition, origin and expected distribution of a wide range of substances in the air – such as particulate matter, ammonia, nitrogen-dioxide, ozone, etc. – and to reach verdicts on air quality (anywhere in the world). AER also has the expertise to assist government policymakers and decision-makers in the private sector when it comes to transitioning to a more sustainable, cleaner and socioeconomically more desirable economy. Our areas of focus and hence our staff are at the heart of debate in society.
What will be your role?
We are looking for a (post-doctoral) researcher with expertise in air pollution or deposition modelling with experience in developing chemistry transport models, and using in-situ (flux) measurements, to join our team at TNO. We currently foresee an increase in our research portfolio on nitrogen (deposition) modelling using our model portfolio. The successful candidate will work on the development, application, validation and interpretation of our modelling chain, which may include 1D deposition modelling in comparison to flux measurements, emission modelling and the more complex atmospheric chemistry transport model LOTOS-EUROS (www.lotos-euros.nl).

- Experience in scientifically leading projects, for example in the role of lead scientist or work package leader, including guiding junior scientists and safeguarding scientific quality.
- Expertise in model evaluation and atmospheric chemistry.
- Strong programming skills (Python and Fortran).
- Proven capacity to acquire projects, including contributing to proposals, interacting with clients, and translating scientific questions into funded research.
