Ballistic Experiments Technician
About this position
What will be your role?
As part of the Personal Protection and Explosives Safety (PPES) department, you will be responsible for the preparation, execution, and reporting of ballistic experiments in our Laboratory for Ballistic Research (LBR). The LBR has access to various testing facilities, mainly focused on large-caliber weapons, small-caliber weapons, and vehicle testing. You will work in a team of specialists and have the opportunity to develop into an all-round range officer.
You will contribute to projects focused on research into improving protective materials, such as bulletproof vests, helmets, vehicles, or concrete structures, against ballistic impact and explosion pressure. In addition, you will help test protective equipment that is used by governments, among others. You will work in accordance with international (NATO) standards and under the ISO 17025 quality standard. Our work is project-based.
You will prepare and carry out measurements, handling research weapons and various types of ammunition in a safe manner. During experiments, you will solve problems together with your colleagues. Where necessary, you will do this in consultation with the TNO project leader or the client, who is often present during experiments. You will ensure that research results are delivered to our clients. Reporting may also be part of your responsibilities, either independently or in collaboration with colleagues.
What we expect from you
We are looking for a colleague with a practical mindset who enjoys working in a team on ballistic experiments. You work accurately and with attention to detail—both in preparation and practical execution, as well as (possibly later) in reporting tasks. You are accustomed to working methodically, solving malfunctions, and proactively thinking about improvements to the testing process and the efficiency of operations.
Do you have an affinity with ballistics, for example through a role where this already played a part or was included in your responsibilities? That would be a strong advantage—it shows your interest in the field and the associated safety procedures.
What you also bring:
- A completed vocational (MBO level 4) education in a technical field, such as mechatronics, civil engineering, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar.
- Experience in a technical, hands-on role (not an office job) is an advantage. Experience in sectors such as defense, machine building, offshore, or automotive is welcome.
- We work with both Dutch and international clients. Therefore, it is important that you have Dutch language skills at B2 level (spoken and written) and English at B1 level (spoken and written).
- The Ministry of Defence is an important client, so an interest in its core tasks is important.
- Safety, quality, efficiency, and confidentiality are essential for performing our work properly—and therefore also for you.
- You will complete the internal TNO training to become a range officer, including an internal exam.
- You hold a category B driving license; a forklift certificate is preferred. If you do not yet have one, you can obtain it through TNO. You may also obtain a first aid (EHBO) certificate.
