Data-driven integrated growing systems: guaranteed cultivation performance through the use of big data in the greenhouse horticulture sector. TNO is working on the further development of digital cultivation with the help of big data and ICT. Digital cultivation is the future of innovations in the greenhouse horticulture sector and goes beyond the mere construction of a greenhouse: by offering support in cultivation and business management, the suppliers of greenhouses can provide guarantees on cultivation performance.

Data driven building and growing in the greenhouse agriculture sector

TNO is working on the development of greenhouse cultivation with the help of big data and ICT. Digital cultivation is the future of innovations in the greenhouse horticulture sector and goes further than just building a greenhouse: by offering support with cultivation and business management, the suppliers of greenhouses can provide guarantees on cultivation performance.

Digital infrastructure for greenhouses

Together with the Hortivation foundation, TNO has set the worldwide standard for the digital infrastructure for greenhouse horticulture. The basis for this is a common language, the Common Greenhouse Ontology. In addition, the Hortivation Hub has been developed, a kind of universal plug for the safe and easy exchange of data between parties.

TNO is developing new applications in the field of data-driven greenhouse construction and data-driven cultivation on top of this infrastructure. This allows greenhouse suppliers to provide new services such as guarantees on cultivation performance.

The data infrastructure of TNO and Hortivation allows companies and technical installations to work together in plug-and-play. With a standard language, to exchange data without misunderstanding. This video explains how that works.

Data driven building

The Data Driven Building program is aimed at improving and making the greenhouse design more sustainable. Within this program products are developed that give greenhouse builders and other suppliers the tools and data to monitor and improve the performance of their products. An example of this is the Greenhouse Information System. This allows suppliers to exchange design specifications to speed up the design process and reduce the risk of miscommunications.

Egon Janssen of TNO, Richard van der Sande of Certhon, Ad de Koning of Ridder, Jeroen Sanders of Vertify and Annie van de Riet of Hortivation explain in the video below how the Hortivation Hub works.

The importance of the Hortivation data hub

Data driven growing

Autonomous cultivation means both predictive power and real-time collaboration between systems and installations. The Data Driven Growing program is aimed at accelerating developments in the field of autonomous growing. TNO is developing GAIA in this context. Sometimes conflicting control settings are generated by the autonomous greenhouse systems. Thanks to GAIA, these control settings are coordinated in real-time, so that these smart systems connect seamlessly, and do not work against each other.
