Because of corona, we are working from home as much as possible. But if we start to travel more again, we’ll soon be stuck in traffic jams or on overcrowded platforms. Part of the solution is Mobility as a Service, or MaaS. This makes it much easier to combine all forms of mobility.

It’s 7:00 am. The alarm goes off and Alexa outlines what's on today's agenda. While brushing your teeth, the app on your phone has already calculated which transportation combination is the most efficient for all of today's appointments. It's going to be a somewhat active mix as you could lose a few kilos.
Mobility as a Service: Convenience is the crux
Fewer traffic jams and greater efficiency, a reduction in emissions and increased safety. We expect the positive effects of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) on our mobility to be significant. MaaS means that you think about the different forms of transport from the user's point of view in order to travel from A to B in an easier, smarter and more comfortable manner. Flexible, straightforward and with freedom of choice. Based on accurate and up-to-date information about all available transport options, which you can then easily book and pay for.
Convenience is the crux. Thanks to a fully integrated system with an optimal user experience, every traveller can quickly find the optimal combination of means of transport. The promise of MaaS is that travellers will be enticed into making more frequent use of active mobility and public transport. As a result, they will leave their car parked more often or even get rid of it.
Reliable alternative to Ownership
If implemented correctly, we foresee MaaS making an important contribution to our accessibility, liveability and safety. In practice, this means that we will be more conscious of our car use. Many people now use their cars to travel to work or private appointments out of habit, but also because there is no knowledge of alternatives or too little experience with other options.
Another reason could be that the range on offer is too fragmented and that it is difficult or not always advantageous to combine different modes of transport. As a result, many households have a car outside their front door which is stationary most of the time. With MaaS, there will be a reliable alternative to owning a means of transport because the use of alternatives will become simpler and therefore more attractive.
MaaS on the international stage
We are developing knowledge of MaaS in collaboration with leading global players such as the Urbanism Next Centre, Fraunhofer and the World Economic Forum. Our New Mobility and MaaS programme focuses on an integrated approach geared towards strategy, technology, impact and governance. At a strategic level, we map out the MaaS playing field for companies and public authorities while keeping mutual interests in mind.
As an example, we are working on a vision study on emerging technologies for Smart Mobility (including MaaS), for the European parliament. In addition, We contribute to the development of technology which makes MaaS possible. This involves in-depth, in-house knowledge on Artificial Intelligence, CAD and platform technology. Through advanced models, we provide a complete picture of the impacts of various MaaS scenarios. In doing so, as much data as possible needs to be accessed and processed.
Finally, we offer advice on how to organise a mobility system that contributes to societal goals in an optimal public-private partnership.
