RESEARCH AREA

My main research area is heat storage; mostly thermochemical heat storage and phase change materials. Over the last 10 years, I have been involved in several PhD projects on this topic, ranging from molecular dynamics and experimental materials research to prototype development and system analysis. In addition, in the coming years, I will extend my activities in the development of metal powder as CO2 free fuel. Finally, I am presenting the course Thermal Energy Storage, giving a broad overview on heat storage, ranging from sensible heat and underground heat storage to PCM and thermochemical systems.

RECENT RESULTS

Over the last 3 years, two PhD projects were concluded on thermochemical heat storage

  • A pilot scale open thermochemical heat storage system was developed. This involved extensive testing to obtain better insight into wall effects on the flow distribution, as well as optimized heat recovery and segment design. In addition, composite materials development was carried out, focusing on stabilization of CaCl2 Finally, the 4-segment 150 liter open-sorption zeolite reactor was built, providing a constant 4 kW for 10 hours.
  • A system optimization was carried out, focusing on application of thermochemical heat storage in either individual residences with solar thermal collectors or a district heating system with geothermal source and ORC. Neural network models for thermochemical heat storage were developed and used to determine the optimized economic system yield, providing recommendations for optimized storage sizing.

In addition to the abovementioned PhD projects, MSc projects were carried out focusing on heat storage in the industrial, residential and agricultural sectors.
