Lungs breathing air again

Look through the eyes of TNO and discover how we contribute to the life of tomorrow by measuring and improving the air quality. In order to achieve sustainable mobility, we're working to make vehicles clean and efficient.

Policy to reduce emissions

To let your lungs breathe clean air again we need policies that reduce the excess of emissions. In order to form effective policies, data on the amounts and origins are necessary.

Reliable data as a basis for success

In order to be able to properly measure gases such as ammonia, nitrogen dioxide, CO2 and methane, precise measuring instruments and the data associated with these are crucial. Satellites play an important role because they can measure across a large surface area and in places in the world where ground measurements are hardly possible, if at all. Our Dutch satellite instrument Tropomi, for example, is able to provide insights into air pollution all over the world on a daily basis.

Smaller and affordable systems

To this end, we are constantly looking for smart, innovative and affordable solutions. For example, we make satellite systems smaller and cheaper, so that they can enter orbit around the earth more quickly. While satellites used to weigh hundreds of kilos, we can already gather data with nanosatellites weighing less than twenty kilos.

According to Anton Leemhuis, senior business developer, TNO can make an important contribution to the development of smaller, more advanced and cheaper satellite systems. "This way individual countries and companies can finance their own satellite systems in order to jointly improve air quality worldwide and reduce greenhouse gas emissions".

Predicting air quality

We use the results of emission measurements to feed our models to be able to predict air quality, with which we help governments, private parties and users to make fact-based decisions about improving air quality.

Urban ares

In urban areas, lungs usually have the hardest time. In the city centers, urban transport contributes to the emission of fine dust. And due to tiny plastic particles separating from synthetic products such as car tires, microplastics float in the air. Each source has its own health impact.

A lot is already happening in the field of sustainable city logistics, but in order to achieve the climate goals additional steps must be taken. At TNO we work on solutions for Zero emission city logistics, among other things.
