Sunlight as fuel for sustainable chemical processes - Project LUMEN

In the Interreg project LUMEN, TNO is collaborating with universities and industry to develop a lab-scale demonstrator to show that hydrogen and carbon dioxide, in combination with sunlight, can be converted into valuable and sustainable products for the chemical industry and the energy sector.

As a society, we are currently facing two major challenges: the safeguarding of our future energy supply by the transfer from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources, and, the reduction of emission of the greenhouse gas CO2. Only this way we can reach the objectives of the Paris climate agreement; limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5 ° C in the 21st century and net zero CO2 emissions in 2050. The Interreg project LUMEN addresses both challenges.

In the Interreg project LUMEN, TNO and 5 project partners have the ambition to demonstrate that hydrogen and CO2, in combination with sunlight, can be converted into valuable and sustainable products for the chemical industry and the energy sector in a commercially feasible way.

Through the use of smart catalysts, first a demonstrator on a lab scale will be developed. Using this demonstrator, the aim is to show the technical and commercial feasibility of the process, which is essential for further upscaling and future commercialization.

We have the ambition to demonstrate that the developed concept can also be used to produce fine chemicals, such as intermediates for medicines, in a safe and simple way. The research within LUMEN will be used as the basis for the future translation into an industrial process and offers commercial opportunities for producers of materials and equipment and chemical companies in the region.
