What will be your role?

Carriers are continually seeking ways to enhance sustainability. Innovative solutions that reduce emissions of trucks, buses, and ships are essential. In the realm of efficient and sustainable powertrains (such as engines), TNO collaborates with numerous stakeholders. Examples include optimising drive systems for vehicles and (agricultural) construction machinery, as well as developing sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. By employing advanced technology to measure emissions in real-world situations, TNO can objectively assess whether new innovations and implemented measures significantly contribute to sustainability goal.

As Senior Business Development Manager, you will manage a significant part of our business portfolio and contract acquisition in South Korea. This includes contract research and joint R&D projects that directly contribute to our Safe & Efficient Mobility and Sustainable Mobility roadmaps. You will bear responsibility for strategic business and partnership development and oversee a variety of key accounts in the private, public and academic sectors. In close cooperation with the team in the Netherlands, you will (co-)develop innovative propositions and position them with strategic stakeholders, accelerating our roadmap for smart and sustainable vehicles. In day-to-day operations, you will team up with research, program and project managers, and experts from relevant research departments in the Netherlands, on topics such as: connected cooperative and automated vehicles, safety assessment, electric vehicles, Electric powertrains for BEV, Fuel cell technologies, energy management and combustion engine technology for sustainable fuels, such as hydrogen and methanol.

In addition to the above, as TNO is active in various Smart & Sustainable Mobility topics, you are expected to support business development activities in other, related areas such as; Digital Infrastructure, V2X communication, Digital Twins, Traffic Management & Optimization, Mobility as a Service, etc. You will also be the liaison between South Korean clients and legal counselors at TNO headquarters to support contract negotiations. You work in a team of dedicated business developers and will report directly to the Regional Director Asia Pacific.

What we expect from you

  • Relevant Master’s or Bachelor’s degree (technical or commercial).
  • Excellent understanding of the Korean business culture; ability to advise foreign colleagues and stakeholders on doing business in Korea, including organising incoming business trips.
  • Fluent in both Korean and English, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • At least 10 years of commercial experience, ideally within the Korean automotive sector.
  • A proven track record in building strategic partnerships and managing complex stakeholder relationships.
  • Affinity with CCAM technologies, such as:
    - Driver-vehicle interaction and monitoring.
    - Sensor fusion, localization, motion planning, decision-making, and control systems.
    - Connectivity and active safety systems.
  • Preferably, familiarity with:
    - Safety architectures and standards (e.g., ISO 26262).
    - Testing and validation of autonomous systems, AI system safety, human factors.
  • Preferably, experiences with one or more Powertrain technologies such as electric vehicles, battery integration technology, (hydrogen) combustion, fuel-cells.
  • Strong ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Willingness to travel within Korea and internationally (2–3 times per year to the Netherlands).

The selection process
