The built environment still strongly depends on natural gas for heating. Yet the urgency of reducing our gas dependence is greater than ever. To accelerate the shift to zero-carbon alternatives, TNO in Delft is committed to optimizing geothermal solutions. And as a junior or medior process scientist you will help our clients, such as leading energy producers and vendors, resolve production and operational challenges in geothermal district heating systems. How? By modelling processes and developing innovative solutions, enabling thousands of homes and buildings to go gas-free. Envision it and join us!

What will be your role?

Working in small, multidisciplinary project teams, you will be contributing to three or four projects at a time. You’ll simulate multiphase fluid flow and heat transfer in pipelines and process equipment and look into challenges such as scaling and corrosion. As operators’ decision making often relies on fast insights, you combine physical modelling with machine learning. Developing your knowledge, you’ll work on increasingly complex problems. In close collaboration with our clients you’ll be tackling the challenges of geothermal plants and, by doing so, expedite large-scale development of geothermal solutions in the built environment.

The internationally diverse team of Heat Transfer & Fluid Dynamics (HTFD) is your home base. Your 35+ colleagues are engineers and scientists sharing our ambition to overhaul the heating sector with innovative solutions. That’s why we need you to share your knowledge and innovative ideas, as we do ours. Leveraging our shared expertise helps us integrate technology from other industries and disciplines in our fields of study, such as hydrogen and CO2 transport. Ours is a professional, fun and supportive environment. Because together we achieve great results, such as one of the world’s first geothermal digital twins!

What we expect from you

You thrive on working at the interface between research and pragmatic, result-oriented solutions for intrinsically complex challenges. Alternating between projects does not trouble you in the least. And you are keen to develop the knowledge and understanding of other disciplines, which will help you improve your modelling skills in a multidisciplinary environment. Showing initiative, you introduce new ideas and you know how to communicate with your colleagues as well as our clients.

Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:
  • A Master’s Degree in Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Energy Technology.
  • Experience of software development in MATLAB and/or Python.
  • Work experience, or a keen interest in process and fluid modelling, flow control and/or geothermal production.
  • Knowledge of machine learning.
  • An excellent command of English, as you’ll be working in international teams. Some command of Dutch would help you communicate with national partners.

What you’ll get in return

Challenging and varied work. And full of opportunities because at TNO you are, by and large, the master of your own career. In addition to a gross monthly salary of between €2950,- and €3900,- (depending on your knowledge and experience), holiday pay and a thirteenth month’s salary, you will get every opportunity to develop your skills. Perhaps you want to advance to medior level, dive deeper into consultancy or build a career as a project leader. At TNO, you can put together a ‘menu’ of terms of employment that suits your personal situation.
