About this position
The energy sector and the (chemical) industry are in a transition toward the use of new feedstock, the use of renewable energy sources, increasing process and energy efficiency, circularity and carbon capture and utilization. The department Sustainable Process & Energy Systems works on all these transitional topics. Our core technical expertise is Separation technologies, Gas- Treatment and Conversion, Electrochemistry and Bio-based Building Block synthesis. We work for- and with (renewable) energy and chemistry companies and in a network of international knowledge partners.
What will be your role?
Some typical projects/programs we are working on:
- Electrification of the industry: VoltaChem.
- Biomass valorization: second generation biomass conversion to building blocks, Biorizon.
- One of the growing subjects within the group is the Circular Plastics program and specifically within SPES.
Both the Biorizon and Plastics recycling program work on the reduction of the carbon footprint of chemicals such as plastics involving groups throughout TNO. Our SPES team in Rijswijk focuses on the development of sustainable processes for chemical building blocks and plastics. With an increasing work stock, we are looking for a junior lab technician. You will be involved in laboratory scale organic chemistry type experiments. You will be part of the lab team that builds setups and performs measurements in the lab and at our clients for our projects.

- You will work as part of project teams on various projects related to development and validation of new processes.
- As a researcher you will be involved in the experimental aspects of such projects. This may involve experiments on laboratory scale as well as benchscale in our laboratory installations.
- In preparations for the experimental tasks you will seek alignment with our prevention officers and lab coordinator to discuss the safety aspects of the work and precautions you may need to take.
- You will report and discuss the outcomes of your experiments with the (lead) scientists of the project and set out direction together on follow-up experiments to be conducted.
What we expect from you
You preferrable have the following background:
- You have a HBO degree in Organic Chemistry, with strong affinity for chemical engineering or process technology.
- You are familiar with different DSP (downstream processing, purification) methodologies.
- Preference for additional experience with analytical chemistry, like GC, LC, FTIR, thermal analysis.
- You have at least 5 years of working experience in a process laboratory environment or equivalent (including operating larger bench scale research setups in a laboratory setting).
- Interest and affinity with process equipment, such as pressurized flow units.
- You have good communication & reporting skills, also in the English language.
- A drive to develop innovative solutions to technically challenging problems by combining the right mix of intellectual curiosity and a pragmatic approach.
- Flexibility to also work in our Bergen op Zoom location when needed.

The selection process
