AI Scientist | Intelligent Orchestration of Complex Systems
From sustainable mobility to energy networks: make real-world systems smarter, adaptive, and more resilient. Shape the future with AI for Complex Systems-of-Systems at TNO in The Hague or Groningen.
About this position
As a Scientist in AI working on intelligent orchestration of complex systems, you’ll help bridge the gap between cutting-edge AI and the complex dynamics of real infrastructure, logistics, and industrial automation. At TNO, we develop intelligent architectures that allow large-scale systems to optimize, self-adapt, and collaborate – across domains, technologies, and organizations.
What will be your role?
Modern AI has opened new possibilities in learning, prediction, and decision-making. But applying these capabilities at the scale of interconnected, mission-critical systems is a challenge in itself. You’ll work in interdisciplinary teams to create scalable solutions that combine machine learning with systems engineering and domain knowledge. Whether it’s routing autonomous vehicles, balancing the energy grid, or improving coordination in supply chains, your work will have real-world impact.
You’ll conduct hands-on research into how large, hybrid systems can learn, optimize, and adapt under dynamic conditions. Working together with engineers, mathematicians, and domain experts, you’ll help design the intelligent building blocks of the future.
You will:
- Apply advanced AI techniques such as reinforcement learning, graph learning, or probabilistic modeling to complex, interdependent systems.
- Develop and test multi-objective optimization algorithms to support trade-offs in cost, energy, performance, and risk.
- Contribute to the architecture of intelligent systems that operate across organizational and technical boundaries.
You'll also explore how systems can become more self-aware, resilient, and capable of long-term learning even in uncertain or changing environments. You’ll build prototypes and demonstrators with partners from industry, government, and academia, and present your findings both internally and externally.
What we expect from you
You combine analytical sharpness with curiosity and creativity. You enjoy exploring complex challenges and translating theory into solutions that matter. You value collaboration and are eager to co-create impactful innovations with partners inside and outside TNO.
You’ll also bring:
- MSc or PhD (or equivalent) in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Systems & Control, Applied Mathematics, or similar.
- Solid knowledge of AI/ML methods such as supervised/unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning, or planning under uncertainty.
- Interest in complex systems, systems engineering, or systems-of-systems thinking.
- Programming skills in Python (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn) or Rust, plus experience with simulation or optimization tools.
- Strong communicator, comfortable in multidisciplinary teams.
Bonus points if you also bring:
- Experience with simulation-based optimization, hybrid AI (ML + physics-based models), or digital twins.
- Knowledge of cyber-physical systems, multi-agent systems, or embedded decision-making.
- Familiarity with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools and architectures.
- Contribution to open-source or scientific codebases.
- Experience with deploying AI models in cloud or edge environments.
What you'll get in return
Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3,385 and € 5,000 (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.
Perhaps you would like to grow your career in the direction of commerce or consultancy? Or would you like to become a project manager? Immerse yourself in sustainable innovations? Or carve out a career as a technical expert?
