Distributed Computing and Cloud-native Engineer
Sovereign digital infrastructure. Smarter logistics. Greener data processing. Make an Impact as a Distributed Computing & Cloud-native Engineer at TNO in the Hague or Groningen.
About this position
As a Distributed Computing & Cloud-native Engineer, you don’t just build systems—you help shape the future of how Europe handles data and computing at scale. From AI to edge computing, from cloud-native platforms to energy-aware infrastructure: at TNO, you’ll work on complex challenges with real societal impact.
What will be your role?
You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team at the crossroads of distributed computing and cloud-native engineering. Together, we develop future-proof computing platforms that are sovereign, federated, and sustainable. Think: hybrid architectures that power smart energy grids, autonomous systems, or AI-driven logistics. You’ll prototype, test, and refine next-generation platforms where edge computing, cloud orchestration, HPC, and alternative computing paradigms meet.
Your work will contribute to impactful initiatives in sectors such as artificial intelligence, sustainable energy, logistics, and public infrastructure. You will work on the design and implementation of distributed architectures tailored for scalable, fault-tolerant, and energy-conscious applications. From the very first prototype to the final deployment, you’ll work closely with researchers and engineers to translate innovative concepts into operational systems.
Some of your core activities:
- Build distributed architectures for real-world scenarios with scalability, resilience, and energy-efficiency in mind.
- Engineer cloud-native and edge-native services that support digital twins and autonomous decision-making.
- Apply DevOps practices for smooth, secure, and reliable deployment cycles.
You’ll also contribute to research-driven infrastructure development and actively collaborate with stakeholders in academia and industry.
What we expect from you
You’re not just a systems engineer. You’re someone who gets energy from working in a collaborative environment and enjoys turning complex ideas into real-world solutions. You like experimenting, building prototypes, and learning from every iteration. You’re curious, driven, and not afraid to ask ‘what if…?’.
Next to this, you also have:
- A MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Embedded Systems or similar.
- Hands-on experience with distributed systems and orchestration tooling (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker).
- Solid programming skills in one or more of: Python, Go, Rust, Scala, Java.
- Familiarity with real-world system-of-systems engineering (e.g., Linux-based environments, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform).
- A strong understanding of both cloud (IaaS, PaaS) and edge computing, including concepts like smart control, federation, and technical interoperability.
Bonus points if you also have experience in:
- Understanding of modern machine learning workflows.
- Experience with energy-aware computing or sustainable IT.
- Knowledge of Digital Twin platforms or industrial control systems.
- Affinity with alternative computing models (WASM, quantum simulators, event-driven services).
- Familiarity with cloud services like AWS, Azure, or GCP.
What you'll get in return
Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3,385 and € 5,000 (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.
