Scientist Thermochemische Conversie | Petten

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Scientist Thermochemische Conversie at TNO in Petten!

About this position

Are you ready to use your knowledge and passion to create a sustainable world? At TNO, you will work on groundbreaking technologies that accelerate the energy transition. As a Scientist, you will be part of the Biobased and Circular Technologies (BCT) department.

What will be your role?

You will play a key role in developing thermochemical conversion technologies, such as gasification. This includes not only the process itself but also gas cleaning and upgrading to high-value products such as green gas, olefins, and methanol. Together with colleagues, you will work on R&D projects to research, validate, and optimize these technologies at both laboratory and pilot scale.

You will be involved in technology development during pre-FEED and FEED studies: from designing PFD concepts to calculating complete systems with mass and energy balances. You will document your results in patent applications, internal reports, client reports, and scientific publications.

In addition, you will collaborate closely with designers to define reactor concepts and contribute to innovative solutions. You will also support research into the pretreatment of solid fuels and material properties in the high-temperature conversion chain, focusing on aspects such as erosion, corrosion, and melting behavior.

Within the TNO Energy & Materials Transition unit, scientists in the Biobased and Circular Technologies (BCT) department research and develop groundbreaking technologies to convert a diverse pool of biomass, biobased, and plastic residues into sustainable chemicals, materials, and energy products. The technologies we develop play an important role in the transition to a sustainable society by leveraging applied bio-energy and bio-based chemicals/materials. These often proprietary technologies are generally based on thermochemical conversion. BCT consists of approximately 40 people with diverse educational backgrounds, such as chemistry, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering, at both technical and academic levels.

At BCT, we work in multidisciplinary and international teams to improve technologies and apply research. When a technology proves successful, we test it at pilot scale. This is the first step toward bringing the technology to market together with our commercial partners. In this way, we make a tangible contribution to the transition in energy, chemistry, and materials, helping the Netherlands and the rest of the world become more sustainable.

What we expect from you

At TNO, you never work alone. You collaborate with various colleagues and external partners, which requires strong teamwork and communication skills. You also have the ability to look beyond what already exists. You are not afraid to explore new paths and contribute to solutions for the energy transition that were unimaginable yesterday.

You have a passion for applied technology development and the ambition to become an expert in thermochemical conversion systems. You are a team player who recognizes and values the competencies of different team members. You are proactive and willing to take the lead when action is needed for the benefit of the team. You enjoy working in a multidisciplinary and international team, learning from colleagues, and sharing knowledge within the team.

Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • You hold an MSc or PhD in Chemical/Process Engineering or Chemistry with 2 to 10 years of relevant R&D experience in thermochemical technologies. Excellent knowledge of designing and engineering such technologies and proven calculation skills are essential.
  • You have proven experience in designing thermochemical processes, from conceptual studies and basic engineering/design to commissioning and start-up of installations.
  • You have proven experience in documenting or publishing scientific and technical results.
  • Experience with programs such as MATLAB, Aspen Plus, and Python is a plus.
  • You are fluent in English and preferably Dutch (if not, we offer courses to help you master the Dutch language).

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3.500,- and € 4.200,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

Perhaps you would like to grow your career in the direction of commerce or consultancy? Or would you like to become a project manager? Immerse yourself in sustainable innovations? Or carve out a career as a technical expert?
