Surface roughness effects, transition on performance
Together with its partners CENER, DTU and TU-Delft, TNO performed wind tunnel tests and field tests to further progress understanding and modeling of the blade surface roughness effects as well as laminar to turbulent boundary layer transition.

The Experimental Investigation of Surface Roughness Effects and Transition on Wind Turbine Performance project has been executed within the framework of the 2nd Call for IRPWind Joint Experiments. The project objectives were to perform aerodynamic experiments focusing on two important phenomena: The effect of surface roughness on performance and the position of laminar to turbulent boundary layer transition. The reasoning behind the tests being to progress understanding and modeling of the mentioned phenomena. To this means both sectional wind tunnel test and wind turbine field tests have been performed successfully. The field tests were performed at the TNO test site EWTW. The complete tests descriptions have been reported and the data are published in an open access repository.
